Spendaholics programme

Did anyone see 'Spendaholics' the other day?

It concerned a woman who was in thousands of pounds of debt and was spending £500 A MONTH on groceries for just her and her husband!

The counsellors suggested she cut that to £250 A MONTH and thought this was radical!!!

I felt like screaming 'old style old style old style old style' over and over at the tellie!

One thing that really annoyed me was the presenter saw her buying a 5kg bag of economy spuds, and stopped her by saying 'no wonder you waste so much food, buy a smaller bag'. Doesn't she know spuds will keep for months as long as they're out of the light?!

Bah.

I know how you feel. I've stopped watching these programmes as I've screamed at them time & time again. Can't remember which programme it was a few months ago but the presenter rifled through the persons cupbaords & THREW OUT all the packet food as it cost too much. Then the poor person had to go shopping with the presenter to spend more money on cheaper food! OK there was a good (mediocre by our standards) lesson in cheaper food shopping but to waste what was already in the cupboard???? I guess it made good TV!

I had a rather catastrophic drop in income from darn good money as a chief engineer down to benefits only overnight.

It took me a while to get used to the change, as you can imagine, but I'm not living from hand to mouth any more, have no sleepless nights over money, and have no fear at all when the latest bill pops through the door.

I only ever watched the first bit of one of those programs and thought... Jeeze! (Well, something like that :) ) Get real! I just couldn't watch any more.

Maybe we should all email the TV company concerned and point the poor saps in this direction :)

Yes, it drove me crackers, I was yelling at the screen

It's about time Martin had one of these programs :money:
It could be on for an hour and split into 2 parts.
In one part Martin could sort out all of their finances; credit cards, phone bills, utility bills, bank accounts etc. etc. with features like holidays one week, buying a new telly the next etc. etc...
In the other 1/2 someone from old style could bring in a load of vinegar and bicarb and take em shopping and do some cooking. There could be an old style recipe featured each week - could get James Martin to cook it - I'm sure Curry Queen would volenteer to help ;) , with regular recipes for rubber chicken and slow cookers. Could get a the nation doing the grocery challenge!!
Could have a recipe book and a grocery challenge book spin off as well as selling Martins book.

It would be great, we could be millionaires (or Martin could) :D

Instead of the grocery challenge the program could have the store cupboard challenge for a few weeks then move on to the grocery one.

Infact it could be a bit like BBC's FAT nation. Martin (and old stylers) could transform a whole street over a couple of months and each houshold could list how much money they've saved each week and a running total.

Could call it ITV SAVE Nation (or something better)

I'm getting carried away now, might have to phone ITV and put it to them :D only proviso being it HAS to be presented by Martin because all of the other so called experts know nothing and are sooo annoying

That's so true. And a sad reflection on our TV programming. Or what our TV programmers think of us - REAL PEOPLE :)

I was just wondering what the implications for the economy as a whole would be if everyone went 'old style'. Everyone panics at a small shrinkage of 'high street spending'. I think your plans for UK domination could bring us all down. Personally I am happy to see others selflessly propping up the UK economy for me! Crazy Fools!

I caught another programme last night called 'Skint'. Really depressing about people who live by pawning their possessions only to buy them back at inflated prices. There was a young woman who repaid her credit card debt by lap dancing for which she had to pay the club owner and hand over a percentage of her tips. She was doing brilliantly I thought by retaining her sense of humour. But again, she was shown pushing a supermarket trolley with 8 2litre bottles of fizzy drinks etc etc and laughing at the camera saying she dreaded that checkout moment. Depressing stuff.

My GF watched that a few weeks back and said it was 'eye opening stuff' Apparently someone was pawning their son's stuff to buy him a birthday present - some present!
