Middle names?

  • My daughter only has one name as we could think of a middle name for her by the time we'd got to the registry office! I wish we'd given her one now, even if it was something hippyish like Rainbow or Moonbeam, or more likely, a family name. Ancestors' names seem to be common for middle names. It seems odd that he won't let you use your family names, I think it would be lovely to have your Pakistani roots in there!

The first part I said it as a joke but also to show her that their roots are no more important than mine.

Just wondering why you don't like the sound of it?

To me it just seems that he thinks your roots & feelings are less than his in this matter.

Personally I don't see the point in middle names. I have one but I never use it even on forms unless they are very official ones (which means hardly any).

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone :)

Jack was the name of OH's grandfather, and Niamh is because of his Irish roots. I wanted to pick middles names to show my Pakistani roots but he's dead against it (don't ask) so my original idea was to have my grandfather's name as a middle name but he won't let me do it!!

As for girls, the name Ann has been going around as a middle name for three generations (my grandma, my auntie and my two cousins) but I'm not very keen on the name - plus it wasn't seen to be a nice gesture, it was more of a points scoring reason.

OH had the idea of using my middle name, Charlotte, to go with Niamh which I thought was pretty cool. I'm just wanting more options because I'm bound to change my mind!

Might just have Phoebe and Phoebo.

What about putting Ann in something like Annabel? Ours is Louise, but I changed my little girls to Louisa to save yet another Louise!

I'm just not a big fan of the name (no offence to any Anns!)

Yes, it does feel like he puts his roots before mine and I've told him about it so many times - deep down I think he's worried about introducing any baby to his side and revealing a "foreign" name that they wouldn't approve of. (his family know about my roots, yet continue to use racist language around me, not towards me though, thankfully)

I was really set on the name Alia or a variation of spelling (Aaliyah, for example) but he just dismissed it.

Why would you want to bring a child into a family that belittle & demean you?

But it's your baby as much as his. You should have a say too. I know that my parents really struggled with names for all of us. My mum wanted Simon for my brother; but dad said he'd get teased. (Simple Simon)

Can't remember how they came up with mine; but know that my surname is my Great Grandmother's.

I agree with whoever mentioned initials - a friends son has the initials JAM.
