My children only have one name and were given the same choice that I was. If they wished they could add a middle name when they were confirmed. Both made the same decision as me and didn't bother.

TBH I don't see the the point of a name that you are probably never going to use and it probably only got added to appease a relative.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone :)

Jack was the name of OH's grandfather, and Niamh is because of his Irish roots. I wanted to pick middles names to show my Pakistani roots but he's dead against it (don't ask) so my original idea was to have my grandfather's name as a middle name but he won't let me do it!!

As for girls, the name Ann has been going around as a middle name for three generations (my grandma, my auntie and my two cousins) but I'm not very keen on the name - plus it wasn't seen to be a nice gesture, it was more of a points scoring reason.

OH had the idea of using my middle name, Charlotte, to go with Niamh which I thought was pretty cool. I'm just wanting more options because I'm bound to change my mind!

Might just have Phoebe and Phoebo.

  • My family most use family names, my niece has my mums name and my nephew has my granddads (both granddads have same name) and my BIL dads name. My middle names are my great grandmothers names (I have 3 middle names) and my sister has the final 1 Great grandmothers name. My mum and sisters middle names is my grandmas name. Anyway you get the picture.

My OH family men all have the same two middle names. I hate that - so unoriginal to have all the same. If we have a boy I will have one of them if that's what my husband wants but not both. Especially as my OH is determined to have the first name he likes - it would mean I had no say on any of the names!!!!!

Girls name - im really stuck on middle names too!!!!! I cant seem to find anything that goes with any of the first names I like.

My future BIL has three middle names and his last name is also a boys name! I keep telling my sister she needs to continue the tradition as I think his middle names are after his dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. She thinks it would be hilarious but he's against it. I'm not surprised, he can barely fill out forms with his name!

Where is the compromise? Your roots are as important as his!

I have a double barrowed first name and 2 middle names. I could NEVER fill out the exams papers with my full name. WAY too long.

I agree. It sounds like your OH is having it all his way and isn't supporting your wants.

    Look, I've tried my best.

His mum asked me why we weren't going to get married in a Catholic church because of his roots (he never goes to church!) and I said that in that case we were going to get married in a Mosque because of mine :rotfl: and that soon shut her up!

I don't mind the Irish first names at all. I've always liked the name Niamh. I think there are some beautiful Pakistani names that would be perfect as middle names and go beautifully with the first names but it's finding ones that OH is okay with - he wants more traditional names but is okay with some of the girl names. It's when I get to boys names he starts shaking his head!

I think he thinks that they're going to be more Irish because he's 1/2 Irish and I'm 1/4 Pakistani, which genetically I think both heritages are equally important. I don't want my kids to not know about their background once my grandfather isn't around.
