  • I am a big John Lewis fan but have to admit often their prices are excessive, especially when you can buy something similar somewhere else!

I agree that a mattress is an investment and therefore you should be open to the idea that you may go over budget. My self and my hubby got fed up of restless nights and back ache - it made us feel way above our age!

Looking at the other suggestions here there are some good alternatives. We bought our super king size mattress from here: https://www.hamseys.co.uk/collections/mattresses/size_super-kingsize-mattress

We invested in a Premier 4000 Sleeptek priced at £599.85 - very very reasonable, it's comfy and the foam base gives more than enough support.

Seemed a lot at the time but buying an expensive (about £600 I think) mattress was the best investment we ever made. You spend a lot of time on it so it is definitely worth spending money on. Can't put a price on good sleep.

Hello everybody. I've just spent the last hour or two reading this entire thread. We've tried a John Lewis Natural Collection 5000 Linen Pocket Spring Mattress, Super King Size, Firm. Both my wife and I like firm beds. However, from Pinkypants advice (thank you for your contributions to this thread!) I'm wondering if we should consider a medium (which they also offer) instead.

Can anyone recommend this mattress or, even better, point me in the direction of the original manufacturer if I can buy the same thing a lot cheaper!

I'd be delighted by any other recommendations that people will have as an alternative too.

    Many thanks.
  • Don't touch Hypnos beds. Got one of the Premier Inn variety and they are incredibly uncomfortable with big indents where the buttons are. Wanted it returned within a day as had backache. Took weeks to arrange for an independent assessor to come out and because it hadn't been turned in the weeks I had it, they guarantee was invalid. Customer services bordered on outright rudeness and were unhelpful. Could not understand that the indents were the problem and had nothing to do with the turns. Don't believe this is a Premier Inn mattress.

Funny you should say that just to give a different point of view and experience, we bought a king size Hypnos mattress last summer not the advertised Premier Inn one but having stay regularly at their hotels our choice was influenced by having slept on them.

It does state that for the first three months they should be turned weekly then at three monthly intervals, ours is superb we both have back problems but have never had a bad or uncomfortable nights sleep on the one we bought.

I think Patek Philippe and a few other watch makers might disagree with you there.

On the basis that you spend about a third of your life in bed, I subscribe to the view that you should spend as much as you can afford on a mattress, even if it means spending less on other things... people don't seem to have issues spending lots of money on a fancy car when a far cheaper one would still get them from A to B.

So if I were looking for a new mattress, spending (for example) up to a few thousand for a king size, which brands actually deliver good value for money without paying for brand prestige or pointless gimmicks?

I discovered John Ryan by Design through this site a few years ago, they do an equivalent to the vi-spring mattress and tell you what would work for your body size. First mattress I've had where I've been comfortable. It's still going strong.

That page gives you some insight into all of the mattress brands and how many of them are basically just the same stuff. They've updated their site a lot it seems, they must be doing well. There's a load of mattress science and advice on there, it seems they've come up with a few solutions to the issues they used to have with tempur type mattresses too.
