Pinkypants, I've decided on the bed now, and shall be ordering tomorrow.
Out of curiosity, how long should a bed last for? I was told approximately 10 years, though it may vary on the bed and how long people sleep in it, I guess.
My present bed is a Relyon Supreme and when I first got it it was fantastic. Best bed ever. It's only in the last few years it's started to lose its support, but it is 13 years old so I can't complain.
It was on the pricey side, but I think a good bed is an investment. People will spend £10k/£20k on a car they only sit in for maybe 7 hours a week, and think nothing if it, but balk at paying a few thousand for a bed. In my opinion a good bed is an essential rather than a luxury. If you're not comfortable sleeping, besides causing physical problems to your back, neck etc, it can also cause psychological problems due to lack of proper sleep. Lack of good sleep is also very ageing and it's been medically proven that it can cause all manor of physical illnesses.
So I'm just wondering if cheaper beds could be comfortable, but just not last as long as more expensive ones?0 -

Beds will last 8-10 years depending on use, turning the mattress, quality etc....
A very decent bed will still look good after 10 years, however the springs and fillings inside will have tired over this time period and not be doing the job properly any more.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -

Hi
I'm buying this one:
http://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk/mattress-sho/superking-mattresses-categories/artisan-bespoke-002-superking/
I'm having the four drawer base too, as it's not much dearer than the two drawer.
It's a bit of an outlay, though I think it's an essential rather than a luxury. My current bed was pricey, but it's lasted me 13 years and is wonderfully comfortable. I would have bought another Relyon but since buying mine have heard reports that the company has gone downhill. I'd like a VI Spring, but the one I want is about £8,000...way beyond my budget....and this one from John Ryan is comparable to the Vi Spring Tiara.
I shall also have one side soft tension and the other side medium tension.
The only other thing I'll need is a headboard, and I've found some online for a few hundred pounds which I like the look of. Though if anyone knows where I can buy a cheap quality one please tell:)0 -

I don't know the make or company, but I have slept on a couple of orthopaedic beds in the past and I found them terribly hard, not sure if they do soft ones, but if they don't I'd personally avoid them.
If you suffer from a bad back - which I do after being in an accident - my orthopaedic consultant told me that hard beds are actually bad for your back. You need a comfortable, supportive mattress and my soft mattress is actually very supportive...or was until it went past its lifespan.0 -

All Orthopaedic means in the bed world is Hard.
It's a term that was invented along with home shopping catalogues likes Kays etc.....
It sounds posh, it sounds medical, but in reality Orthopaedic beds/mattresses are normally far too hard for most people.
Your dead right that a softer supportive bed is better. Let's face it we have 33 vertebrae in our spine which are curved. If a mattress doesn't "give" how can it mould and support the body correctly.
There is a massive difference from supportive and hard.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
