On the basis that you spend about a third of your life in bed, I subscribe to the view that you should spend as much as you can afford on a mattress, even if it means spending less on other things... people don't seem to have issues spending lots of money on a fancy car when a far cheaper one would still get them from A to B.
So if I were looking for a new mattress, spending (for example) up to a few thousand for a king size, which brands actually deliver good value for money without paying for brand prestige or pointless gimmicks?Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -

Whilst I agree with you to a point, I'm remembering that this is a MONEY SAVING forum, a mattress to a degree is a mattress. Comparing it to a car is a little off somewhat. Cars are different shapes to each other, have different specs to each other in terms of A/C, radio etc.. But the kicker with cars is the snob factor i.e what brand you drive. Who the hell sees or even cares what mattress YOU sleep on.
Once you hit around the £600-£800 price point for a king size mattress anything else is just pointless gimmicks!
I'm just offering my independent 15 years+ of experience in the trade of what I consider very good value for money.
Think of it as 2 builders that are THE SAME standard one is £10 an hour and the other is £40 an hour as he drives a top of the range car, has a secretary and a top accountant to pay.
All the big boys have massive over heads and there's only one person that pays those overheads at the end of the day and that's the end consumer.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -

Hope they told you to turn it regularly, weekly for the 1st 8-12 weeks (sorry) and then once a month after that.
You may notice that the fillings settle a little where you body has been, this isn't a fault with the mattress. It's just like walking on the same bit of carpet. The fillings flatten, turning the mattress will help.
It is a beast of a product for sure. Sleep well.
In preparation of my crystal 3000 arriving
Are you supposed to turn and rotate as well or just turn? What is the properly schedule for this?
I saw a Hypnos mattress online which had a label on every side of the mattress with month on them, is this the same ?0 -

Thanks - I'm not criticising anyone... it was a genuine question as to how to get quality on a par with the expensive brands without paying for the brand name, the posh shops etc. Mattress brands are unfamiliar to most people and there seem to be plenty of dodgy brands out there claiming to be a bargain.
To go back to the car analogy, a BMW has more brand prestige than a Renault, so some of the price difference is due to this. But then the BMW will also be better made, more reliable, more durable. So by paying more you're also getting a better product - although it's a case of diminishing returns, as you don't get twice as good a product for paying twice as much. Your builder analogy only works if the cheaper builder is actually just as good as the expensive one - maybe the expensive builder is expensive because he's better at building and can ask higher prices, and spends it on better staff.
Anyway, it's interesting to see your suggestion of £800 being the sweet spot. Our current king size mattress was around £800 IIRC from John Lewis. It's nice and comfortable but it's starting to feel a bit worn after only 3 years, so I'm not particularly impressed with the durability. Next time maybe I'll try spending a similar amount with Restus.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

Turn it, then turn it and rotate it, then back to turn. Repeat for life!
Do it WEEKLY for 1st 6-8 weeks, a hassle I know but it'll help with the settlement of the fillings. Once a month thereafter.
Sleep well.

Hi Pinkypants,
You are SO helpful and really know your onions too:)
I've yet to replace my bed as have been decorating etc, so now am having to decide on which bed to buy. My current one is about 13 years old and when I first got it I was over the moon, it's a Relyon Supreme, soft and wonderfully comfortable. It was like sleeping in a cloud. It has started to dip slightly, possibly due to so much usage by my OH:( and of course its age. I understand beds should be changed every 10 years?
I don't want to buy another Relyon as I've heard their quality has come down....
I'd love a Vi SPring but it's outside my budget. However, I have seen an alternative made by Factory Beds Direct and going by everything they say on their site, they sound brilliant.
They do one which they say is comparable to a Vi Spring Tiara but is thousands cheaper. Of course, I can't try beforehand, but they do say they will refund if it isn't suitable. Bit of a headache doing that though......
So, two questions I have for you if you don't mind:
I'm getting a superking and my current one is just king size. Turning the mattress is a giant feat due to the weight of it. I'm thinking of getting a zip and link to make turning the mattresses easier.
Are there any downsides to zip and links, or are they much the same as a full mattress?
Second question I have for you if you'd be so kind:
I'm putting a link below to the bed I'm thinking of getting from Factory Direct. They go into great detail about it and say it's like a Vi Spring Tiara, so with your expertise I'd like to know if you think this is a good buy or not?
They sound a decent company but I'm a bit concerned paying a lot of money for something I haven't tested.
Many thanks in advance
