Maintenance for the LPG kit isn't that much, and you're potentially saving 20+p/mile in fuel... it'd certainly cost you less than servicing a separate Yaris.
My girlfriend owns the XP10, first generation Yaris. I have the XP90 second generation Yaris. We do not drive each others cars, not sure why you'd think immediately assume that.

Just the usual set up makes it look like fronting - you having 2 cars, one a high end car and the other a cheap car, with you mentioning the girlfriends insurance on the same model of cheap car and you only being able to maintain a single set of NCD. The cheapest option for you would have been to have your NCD on the M3 and the girfriends NCD on the Yaris, though that'd mean fronting. Anyway, we were a bit harsh and for that I apologise.
  • It is a MUCH MORE of an advanced engine that any bog standard one you see on the road. The M3 uses racing spec parts, hence why it is able to produce 100 plus HP per litre and red line to 8300 rpm.

That doesn't make it more advanced, simply better engineered.

The principle of the engine (suck, squeeze, bang, blow) is the same as any other 4C petrol engine, therefore the suggestion that conversion to LPG is in any way more difficult is incorrect. Yes, you need to ensure the kit is well matched to the vehicle, and yes, it will need to be properly set up and programmed to maximise its efficiency and minimise any potential issues, but those are EXACTLY the same caveats as around any other conversion, remap, or performance-enhancing modification one cares to make.
  • As a qualified LPG fitter I take your comments on board. However I still think it doesn't make sense to purchase high performance cars such as the M3 and get it converted to LPG as you'd spend more on the maintenance with the extra miles.

Why not? You can use the car more for lower cost, and your maintenance regime could actually be less invasive; oil and filter changes can potentially be extended, primary-fuel filter changes less often, lower efficiency-loss over time due to carbon build-up. Extended lambda-sensor life, fewer issues with catalyst-blockage, less acidic exhaust emissions resulting in less exhaust corrosion...

Thousands of LPG users are very happy with the savings they're making.
  • Cannot convert any M series (not 3 series btw) such as the M3 to LPG. That would be a criminal act. Never heard of anyone doing this to their M cars.

I do around 3-5k miles/year in the M3. Only use as weekend toy car

M engines are typically well suited to lpg due to running high pcp's :)

Thats marvelous, but the OP isn't converting his M car to LPG....he was asking about the Honda 1.7 diesel car.....as normal the MSE forum answers questions the OP hasn't asked!

  • I was just stating that as opposed to the belief it's some kind of bad thing, M engines are some of the best candidates for lpg :)
Civic diesel? Now that's some nonsense talk!
  • Back to the original topic, I have narrowed it down to the 2003-2005 Honda Civic hybrid or the Civic 1.7 CDTI.

Here is a link for the hybrid:

What one do you think would be better in terms of reliability and maintenance costs? I would prefer the newer 2006-2010 civic hybrid but that's out of my budget.

True, but the forum was offering a money saving alternative to buying a second car, with the associated costs of insurance, VED, maintenance, etc.
  • Does anyone have an answer to my question. Whats better the 1.7 CDTI Civic or the Civic 1.4 i-vtec IMA hybrid?
  • Better at what? Sending you to sleep.

I'll be asking would an eleven year old battery still be effective?

    Skoda pre-DPF diesel, job done.
