Thanks to those trying to understand my point of view and to those trying to help.
I came on here hoping to find someone who had experienced the same thing and who had tried to cancel without penalty.
    It hasn't quite happened ....yet!
One or two on here need to rethink why they are on these boards. Is it to help people or fuel their own egos?

I notice that in the Platinum brochure it has only 4+ T rating, while in the a la carte brochure it has 5 T rating, so it seems to have lost half a T for some reason
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

OP, would you not just accept a change to a hotel that is in the same brochure that you booked from?
I think you might just have something to run with if you ask Thomsons

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love the hotel, I just think I've been cheated a little.
The Americans book and cancel when the price drops all the time.
We don't have that over here.

    I wonder why that is?
    Maybe nothing....maybe something!
    I'll find out.

BTW I can't understand why anyone would want to go to Jamaica, we've been twice on cruises, never again

We do, just book as an independent traveller then you can cancel and re-book as many times as you like.

No, it still is 5, the Platinum is only half a page on the right, the four + is for a different hotel Club Riu Negril

We did Dunns River Falls when on a cruise and while I thought the people were a little pushy, they were no worse than in Egypt.
We normally do Mexico in January,Vegas in the summer and we're doing Dubai later in the year too.
Our January holiday is normally just to relax, so staying on site for two weeks (if we have to) doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I think Montego Bay is fairly safe provided you take normal precautions.

Thought about it often, but I do like the safety of a package. Heard some horror stories from independent travelers during Volcanoes etc.

At least insurance policies have improved since, you can now get cover for such events.
