Just phoned to place my oil order.....finally prices going in right direction with diesel/heating oil. We could probably wait another 2-3 weeks but I pay monthly anyway and prices will creep up as weather gets cooler.
Was nicely surprised to hear my account is 600 in credit as heating hasn't been on since April/May time, and top up is likely to cost 450 max as tank isn't empty. So have asked them to see if they can reduce my monthly DD from 185 a little, they may not as obviously most expensive time of year for heating coming up. Need to dig out statements to try and work out % reduction in oil price so that can reduce DD by that amount. :)

DD called yesterday and is coming home at weekend for DS birthday which is every sweet of her :)

Ordered DS present on Amazon last night - all he has asked for is a special edition PS3 controller £48 (he only got one last year - the PS3 was his birthday and Christmas present last year). His other top priority was Percy Jackson book released today £7.50 which I am hoping my sister pre-ordered - said she would but it hasn't been ticked off my amazon wish list so am panicking!

DD said freezer space in uni kitchen is not used much by others so she can stock up on meals - has asked if we can cook some Thai green chicken curry and lasagne to freeze some down - she has been eating vegetarian only as "chicken is £4-5 a pack and mushrooms are only £1 per pack) ---her words not mine!!!!:)
Usually family all come down for kids birthday weekends but think that it will be a quiet one this year, dad not so well at the moment, and everyone has travelled around lots last few weekends, plus will need to drive DD back on Sunday so she can take some more stuff with her. :)

DD is one smart girl. You have definitely taught her well. She needs to spend some time on Greying Pilgrims thread on here. GP has cut my spending on meat dramatically. Mr T's had an offer on, 2x 2kg packs of red lentils for £4. DD needs to learn the art of red lentil lasagne/bolognese et al! I double up 500g of mince, with added lentils and you don't even notice the difference :D others here are meat free and don't use anything but the lentils. Haven't been that brave myself!

Hope DS gets everything he would like for his birthday. Check with sis. Don't ask, don't get they say!!

Really impressed with the oil :) well done you. I am sure they will allow the direct debit to drop a bit. The big energy companies now have to refund you at billing time if you are more than £5 in credit, thanks to OfGem (not particularly helpful to those people saving for winter!) but it might help swing your case if you mention these regs in place for gas/elec. Maybe offer to bring it up with ofgem yourself about extending it to oil if they won't cooperate ;)

Hope you have a lovely eve! x

DD is one smart girl. You have definitely taught her well. Thank You Lilt! (NOA takes bow :D)She needs to spend some time on Greying Pilgrims thread I think she'll love it - she has this odd habit of reading recipe books whilst eating......on here. DD much prefers veggie lasagne anyway - not too keen on red meat, though likes it occasionally. Her favourite lasagne is one with courgettes/peppers/mushrooms or spinach and lentils - haven't tried just lentils by themselves yet.........
Hope DS gets everything he would like for his birthday. Check with sis. Don't ask, don't get they say!! He won't as games are £30-40 each when released new.... in a few weeks they'll go down in price so he'll get more for his money!!!! He's 14 on Saturday .......Book was ordered just not through my wish list- so he'll be thrilled - he was quite upset to see only 17 copies left on amazon on day of release.....

Hope you have a lovely eve! x

    You too :) xx

Thanks Belle! I am really proud of her :D All that nagging when I thought she wasn't listening! :p We haven't had meat since Sunday :) OH is gradually getting used to it, DS is doing brilliantly but then he does have a hot meal at lunch times most days.

Am off for an long soak, still reading Game of Thrones, half way through book one - actually v good and much less graphic than the series!!!

  • Hi NOA

I don't often post on threads but have read through yours over the past few days and it really is inspirational.myou are doing the most fabulous job and you sound like such a lovely lady- you should be very proud! Your kids (well young adults!) sound like they have adapted amazingly well to the changes and you can take credit for their resilience :)

Just wanted to add that I fully support you wantin to keep your DS in private education. My parents sent me to a private school for a year, was my last year of secondary school and I wasn't behaving or performing so they decided on the drastic move. Although it was nothing to do with the school itself, all me and my lack of trying. I really didn't enjoy the school as I felt quite lonely as everyone had their groups of friends but the education was just fantastic. I feel privileged to have gone there and really appreciate the understanding I have and the distinctions I can make between the 2 types of education. It is a fantastic start you are giving him, you should be very proud.

Good luck with your journey, am subscribing :)

CCL - what lovely things to say - Thank you so much!:) I find it amazing that anyone would find my story inspiring as a lot of the time I just feel I am floundering and only just managing to keep afloat!. But I said before and will say again, these pages have been a new life line to me these past few weeks, a lot of the time I just type furiously without looking to see what has been autocorrected...so plenty of typos:p.... The praise encouragement for each insignificant little step that follows after each post is such a boost, good thing there is no webcam as often am sitting here grinning ear to ear whilst I read and post - must look very silly!!!:D

And thank you for you support on the education, moving schools at best of times is difficult but when it is not at the normal change times ie 11 or 16, it is really hard to break into established friendship groups - I have always told my two to look out for people who seem to be alone or shy, my DD is especially good at collecting such stragglers/misfits/shy quiet ones/ excluded ones, often to the annoyance of her "group" of friends. In her secondary school one of her longstanding friends (another stray she had 'homed' , once described her as the "glue that keeps the group together " - I thought that was one of the nicest compliments she has ever had:)

I know that both of my two have been very privileged to have had the opportunity for a great education, we and they have gone without a lot of things their friends have - its a very different and very competitive world out there now, everyone wants what they think is best for their children :)

Honoured to have you (and everyone else who has subscribed) following my daily trials and tribulations.......

Hi NoOneAround, I hope its ok that I subscribe and follow your journey? I've just sat and read the first 6 pages, you're right our debt levels are really similar...its strangely reassuring not to be alone! I can identify with so many of your feelings about your children's education - I was privately educated (however I know I'd have done just as well at state school) but for some reason I feel incredible guilt that I cannot afford to send my own children to private school even though the school they are at is marvellous! As a result I'm struggling to pay £150 per month in tutor costs to make me feel better. Neither of them even need the extra help...but even as I write this I still cant even think about cancelling the tutor - so very irrational! Any how thought I'd drop by and subscribe...looking forward to following your journey..

Hazeldreams, thank you too for following and I'm so sorry its taken a few days to reply to this properly, problem with this forum is I jump around and there is so much to take in I sometimes start something and then get distracted :(

Both my two would have done equally well at a state school, and my nieces and nephews are doing brilliantly as are many of my friends' children - it's just the circumstances and the bullying my daughter went through that we ended up on this road - nad then having done one thing for one child I cannot bring myself to not do the same for the other! especially as I think boys are probably more easily distracted ;)

There is absolutely no need to feel guilty! Such easy words to say but I know how difficult it is to do!! It took me a very long time before I started cancelling kids activities too. But if it works for you, then that is what you have to do. We always found a way to survive and get through and an opportunity of some sort always turns up when you think you have reached the end and there is nowhere to turn.......
