  • Hey NOA!

Seems like you are doing well sorting everything out :)

Strange question - does your DS know that you are short of money? He could be feeling bad about himself because he goes to private school and knows it costs a fortune, but doesn't feel able to talk to you about it?

Just a thought :) keep up the good work and hope your back feels better soon.

    HBS x

Thank you for dropping by HBS...much appreciated x

Yes, we started talking about it to DS and DD earlier this year, so he is aware. He doesn't talk much about it, gets quite worked up if I say no to something and go on to try and explain my reasons, probably because I get tense as well(as I am always saying no...). On the one hand I think its a really good lesson for them, on the other hand its a horrid way to learn...

I'm not sure I'm ready to talk about the wobble he had yet, but yes, it was partly because he didn't feel able to talk to me, and mostly peer pressure (that sounds far more drastic than it probably is!!!!)...its me that feels like a failure (and yes I know I am not supposed to say that :D)

  • It seems like you've taken quite a lot of nagging over the school fees here but life isn't all practicality and as the child of parents who put themselves in debt to make sure I had a comfortable (not extravagant) upbringing and paid it off once we were adults, I completely see where you're coming from. In the end family come first.

Despite our finances my parents didn't let me take on a part time job until I went to Uni - my dad had his own business while I was a teen and we also got the brunt of unpredictable wages making it look like my parents had money to support me that they really didn't and therefore small loan and no grants for me.

It was such a shock to me but the best thing ever. I had such fun with both Uni and work friends and it really helped me learn to prioritise as well as expanding my social sphere - I'm sure your daughter will have a similar experience :)

Belle, Thank you for your post, you have no idea how much that means to me - sometimes as a parent you begin to feel that kids don't appreciate what you do for them, and to have you, from the "other side" showing that you are aware and do appreciate makes it all worth while. I too will never be able to repay my parents for the sacrifices they made for us, they too never let me get a job whilst at school (even though I wanted one ..."that's what we are here for" they said. Someone else earlier on this thread also posted a similar experience to yours, need to check back and thank them too in case I didn't say it so clearly then!

Everyone's choices and priorities are different, and I know I could make our lives very easy by pulling son out of school, and I know it may be difficult for others to understand, but to me, that will feel like I'm pulling the rug out from under his feet. I love food, but don't mind not eating out, I can cook and am reasonably good at it. I love travelling and miss doing it now, but its meant I have explored the UK more, kids grew up in NT /EH places! I have thrown all my energy at the kids, had them late when I was bored of playing, so was ready to do so. And I would do the same again, because the choices were right for me at the time I made them :)
