It's a misconception that people have that if you are on disability benifits Ie: ESA & PIP you are claiming a fortune lol
One "Friend" said how can you not live in a free house (rent paid an no council tax) & £500 a week cash in my hand and a free car lol
I wish my Wife wasn't Disabled and we could both be back at work full time earning a Living
As you say there is a lot of people who read various things on the internet and in the tabloids and simply believe every word that is written.

The biggest misconception is that Motability cars are free, they're not free. The majority require a deposit to be paid, and they are provided in exchange for the benefit that wouod normally be paid every 4 weeks, now in addition to the benefit.

Yet depite all of these lies that are printed, some of which are intentionally printed by the Tabloid press, the Government never stands in to defend the benefits that these cars provide to people with disabilities. They are happy to let the lies and scaremongering go on no matter what effect this has on disabled people, the majority of whom (again despite the press/government propaganda) are not fakers/scroungers.

The Government is supposed to provide protection for all people who live in the UK. This government however is effectively not only encouraging but is complicit in the continued attack on disabled people.

The problem is always the same, the increasing number of people who abuse the scheme. Those who get the car for their whole family claiming they are entitled to it because they take their mum shopping with her when she goes for her family.

What really got to me is when the girfriend of a friend of ours started moaning that she was angry that her daugher was about to be reassessed for DLA and she might lose the car as a result, meaning she wouldn't be able to drive down to see say boyfriend (whilst she left her daughter with her mother). She was a nice girl, but it really shocked me that she would consider it a right of hers to have this car for her own enjoyment, forgetting that it was her daugher who was entitled to the car, not her.

Where the evidence that more people are abusing the system?

I knew a family who put the elderly mum in respite while they went on holiday for 2 weeks in the car that was meant for the elderly Mum's use.

Most of us accept that there is huge abuse of DLA, both mobility and care.

More like you don't think they're disabled, do they're clearly abusing the system. But you won't see them struggle to dress themselves, cook a meal to decent standard, struggle to talk to others they don't know, not be able to wash themselves, etc.

I really want to know where this evidence us of this supposed huge abuse of DLA. And no, "they look fine" isn't evidence.

How can you have evidence apart from the people being prosecuted? No one whose DLA is not renewed is going to say that they aren't entitled and possibly weren't whilst receiving the payments.

Do you believe that everyone whose condition improves informs DLA? That no one exaggerates or tailors their issues to fit the descriptors, or uses only their worst day scenarios when completing the forms. It would be naive to think that no one does this when there is a decent amount of tax free, non means tested income on offer.

I'm sorry but there is no proof at all that there is a 'huge abuse of DLA/motability etc'.

Yes there will be some people abusing the system, just as there will be some abusing every benefit, just as there are some who refuse to pay their taxes and some who use questionable/illegal means to reduce their taxes.

I see that this forum is still home to the stupid few who continue to spout lies and enforce Government propaganda against the most vulnerable in the country.

I find it quite amazing that those who 'know of someone next door/down the road/at work/in the next street/ etc who are abusing the system' also seem to know everything about these persons (if they exist at all) medical history/diagnosis/prognosis and are such experts in the field of medicine, that they can tell what a person is and isn't able to do.

Disability benefits have the lowest amount of fraud compared to other benefits. (child benefits, JSA, income support, etc)

i could swap my DLA mobility for a car ( i dont because my PA has her own and i pay her petrol and parking. if she had a majpr mechanical issue i would also try to help)
to look at me you would think i was perfectly fine.
5 foot 1 weighing just over 7 stone, as fit as a flea, no mental difficulties ...
of course that means i'm fine!!
it peezs me off that the armchair experts are so quick to decide who they consider 'entitled'
that includes other disabvled people that consider blindness to be a minor irritation ...
