Jealousy of Motability car

  • I overheard a mum in Alder Hey Hospital today saying that she would have to return to the toilets to change her baby, as the disabled toilet was in use - and she sounded really exasperated! Personally, I can never understand why a hospital such as Alder Hey, which caters for so many disabled kids, has only one disabled toilet at each end of the building. I have had to wait for it to become vacant many times, so that I can take my son in.

It just goes to show a) how gullible/stupid some people are, and b) proves that the Government propaganda machine is running to plan.

The biggest problem is that there are so many mis-truths spread by the media, and the sheeple who believe everything it and the Government say about disabled people.

It's one of the reasons I chose not to have a Mobility car and instead use the money to fund treatments that are not available on the NHS, and also to offset the cost of reducing my working week to 4 days rather than 5, which allows me additional time to recover and recouperate such is the effect working has on my conditions.

I also think the name of the scheme needs to change. Motability implies that the cars are only for those who cannot mobilise/walk etc and this is not the case as has been demonstrated many many times.

Yes you have tyo have the higher rate of Mobility DLA? Enhanced Mobility for PIP, but it doesn't mean that the person with the car/award cannot walk at all. They may have limited walking ability, they may even not have any problem with their legs and be able to walk perfectly normally but may have a condition that means they run out of breath, or a condition that is affected by the act of walking such as a heart condition, they may have mental health issues that leaves thenm in danger when walking etc etc etc...

Yes there are people playing the system, but theres just as many, if not more, fiddling their expenses/taxes, and yet nothing ever seems to be done about them.

It also seems to be the case that many people who are against the motability scheme doen't realise that car car is given in exchange for the money that person is entitled to in DLA/PIP/etc. It isn't a free car, the person in receipt of the benefit is paying to lease the car. They never own the car at any time during the contract period. Many people also pay a deposit on the car they lease in order to get a better spec. These deposits used to be unlimited in terms of size but are now restricted to £2000 I believe which means that unlike in the past not every model of car is available on the scheme.

As for the person on page 1 of the thread who seems to have an issue with a person washing their car, is it wrong for a person to have pride in their posessions? It's also a fact that a car returned to the dealer in a good condition at the end of the contract means that the person can get back some of any deposit they may have paid on the car.

I could lease hire a car via a well known company which includes insurance/tax etc etc for a 3 year period privately for almost the same money as the motability scheme, and yet there seems to be a real problem with Motability.

In the 2 years following the recession a number of car manufacturers admitted that had it not been for the motability scheme there would have been a much bigger downturn in the new car industry than there was. One even suggested that Motability saved the New car Industry in this country.

Another benefit to the scheme, which everyone who is a car owner can enjoy, is the fact that once a car is returned there is the option for someone looking for a 2nd hand car to grab a bargain. Most of the cars from Motability have low mileage, they are all serviced annually, and most are spotlessly clean and tidy. It's what I intend to do once I have a bit of money available to buy a replacement car.

In many ways it is jealousy, and to be jealous of someone who has health issues just because of a car is very sad. In the main however I think it's simply the weak minded who have allowed themselves to be brainwashed and now believe everything that is printed about how the disabled are scroungers.

The Nissan note is the best selling car on the motability scheme the reason in MHO is the government "Bribed" Nissan to spend £125 Million on the factory in Sunderland with "Tax Breaks"
the £0 for all models except the top of the range going for between £50 & £100 as a "Incentive" to the End User

There are 575,000 Motability cars on the road at one point being 1 in 5 newly registered car

The average car on motability costs £19000 the average cost of a "Private" car is £28000

What I'm trying to say is basically the motability scheme kept the car industry working kept the salesman working then the money fed down the chain

Also we the "Lucky" Recipient's and their family get a nice new comfortable and reliable car
  • The figures don't reflect though that the car is handed back at the end of the lease and therefore no residual value is retained by the leasee.

Just worked out adding up the figures for the Wav i've ordered through motability.

    Purchase price is £19.5k

    5 years hrm & £3495 downpayment I have to pay = £18250

Yes admittedly I get RAC cover and insurance (neligible) but not the real bargain made out.

As the vehicle would still be worth much more than the difference on the 2nd hand market.

It does feel like WAV users get the bum deal in comparison.

True fed up and stressed also the reason you got a WAV = "Van" to the layman is because you need a Vehicle large enough to accommodate a wheelchair or scooter
not so you can do removal jobs on the side like was said to another carer I talk to ie: you can use your van to move house Lol

people say about the insurance being covered by motability I just checked the fully comprehensive premium for me on the car we have the mitsubishi ASX Is a massive £350.01 Lol a year which is £13 cheaper than my 10 year old diesel megane also being on "Fleet" insurance it lowers that single premium to a negligible level most company's cover Their employees in company vehicles

Haa ! If only I can barely lift a pint of milk never mind move house with it ! Although I did have to sign a disclaimer that I wasn't going to use it as a taxi ..seems from what he said that sadly is a relatively common occurance.

Surprised Councils don't require proof of ownership of the vehicle when licencing taxis.

Notability is great for those who can drive a normal manual car without adaptions, it's not as great if you need a auto for hand controls and it's rubbish for the most severely disabled who need WAVs.

    Mrs Sparrow,

So you could have paid for the wall but choose to have a holiday instead?
Respite care is available in this country and at less cost and better quality than a cruise ship.

I, respectfully, suggest that your post could have could have done more harm than good to the disabled.

Actually this is inaccurate respite care is more expensive than a cruise. I know someone who goes on a cruise with their DP for respite. They pay their own cruise fare and the LA pays for the DP employee. They have profound needs. So cheaper than £1000+ per week in a respite care home. They get one to one care and cruise ships cater amazingly for the disabled and they get to travel as well. Empowerment :D

Agreed. I do remember a friend asking if I receive DLA. But unlike other posts in here, it wasn't him trying to accuse me of fraud or whatever.
