OK, say there's a company who constantly create IDs to SP on MSE with varying and wonderful ID names that bare no connection to the company (there's a bathroom company already doing this) do we no longer report them? We have no proof as we only have a username to go on but the knowledge that this company are always SP'ing on MSE. Do we report as it looks suspicious (surely MSE Admin can check IP's?) or do we ignore letting this company continue to SP?

in the above case there is something to suggest SP so I'd normally report it with reasons why, but if the forum team are asking for more proof you would have to say you haven't got anything concrete,
if they are not prepared to remove the threads on the evidence you give them then it is safe to say they wouldn't want it removed by the spam button either, which was the point of this thread, real spam should be removed by the spam button everything else should be up to the team :)

I sit here in total admiration I have no idea how but on every thread you manage to find a reason to bring it back to Christmas.

I think you must be related to Father Christmas and thus this is self promotion!

So spam or report button?

Little Miss Santytoes! that's me! :rotfl: And Moneybot, you wouldn't dream of reporting me as spam because I now you love me really - just as much as I love you! mistletoe-hat-smiley-emoticon.gif You are a cheery little cherub!

  • What are the differences between the Spam and the Report button then?

We're being asked not to use the spam button for self promo so we should be respecting that decision, and do as we're told before they start bringing all crazy rules and regs!

Just use the report button instead? if that's what it's there for.

Removal via the Spam is more automated AFAIK.

So many clicks get it automatically removed.I do not know the number of clicks required.

Removal via the Report buttons needs MSE admin physical intervention.

That's my understanding of the difference.

Hope it takes more than one or two spam presses to make a thread go, I press it accidentally quite often and quickly unpress it! It's always in my way!!!

    hi, thanks for that,
it's an interesting observation as I've seen many say they've
'pressed' the spam by mistake though some don't/aren't sure how to 'unpress' it,
so I imagine that accounts for a lot more for the 'spam'
    button being pressed.

I took the stick from some members to post my opinion.

I will never know why some members feel it is ok to make fun & belitte other peoples opinions.

I hope you didn't think I was making fun, LO - I do find it odd that you'd post in a thread telling you not to press the spam button for self-promotion, a statement that you'd just pressed the spam button for a self-promotion post.

But that wasn't meant to upset you: I just didn't entirely understand why you'd post in this thread that you'd done that, but not be able to explain why you thought it was better to regard it as spam than as a something for the report button :)

Anyway... Back to the general topic...
Maybe the problem is that it's just easier to press the spam button than go through the report writing process?!? :undecided
