Self promotion is NOT the same as spam

I will click spam when I think it's spam. I think that's spam.
So what is your definition of spam?
I still don't think you have read the op.Rational judgement, now, at this very moment.
Virtuous action, now, at this very moment.

Willing acceptance - now, at this very moment - of what you can’t change0 -

:wall:
Who'd have thought a simple instruction could turn into such a debate?! :rotfl:
I report self-promotion, using the report button. I usually send evidence if I have it. This is what I have been told to do by MSE admin, and Glad in this very thread.
The other day, someone had replied to a dozen or so threads with "Home tutor for free" then a link of Chinese characters. That was spam. It was posted multiple times, under completely irrelevant threads.
How anyone promoting a comp could be considered a spammer unless they posted it more than once in the forum, or the comp was obviously a scam, I'm really not sure why anyone would use the 'Spam' button...
I guess we don't all agree on what spam is.
We do agree on the fact that we want to participate in this forum.
We do - presumably - appreciate (in both senses of the word) that this is a free forum.
Therefore, we accept - presumably - that we do not run the forum ourselves, and as non-paying participants effectively grant ourselves (virtually) no say in how it is run.
If it makes the forum team's life easier for us to report self-promotion, not use the spam button, why wouldn't we do that, as much as to show appreciation for the existence of this place as anything?
It's a simple instruction, hardly rocket science. And boasting about pressing the spam button for a post that's self-promotion totally baffles me, and I really hope that the OP wasn't fully read, and just the title. Otherwise, well, it seems pretty deliberate to me.
It's like my dog whizzing on the carpet then rubbing my nose in it... :rotfl:0 -
I still think the best thing is don't click anything then we would not be having this conversation lol

:rotfl: Yes, that's probably true, although I'm guessing the Forum Team would just like us to do as we're told, and do press the spam button / report buttons as appropriate
Maybe not because they would have a lot less work to do if we reported nothing either spam or sp.
You never know they may have time to spot it themselves

suppose at the end of the day until we get an OFFICIAL post from MSE Admin/forum team
instead of us members debating/tellling others/advising others/trying to help advise
others/ about whether we should/should not press spam/report SP/ &/or
which 'buttons' we're supposed to press/report etc
i guess it's just a case of doing what most of have been doing for years & that's
pressing the Spam/reporting & then leaving them to deal with it,
i'm quite confident the forum team
when they receive reports/spam 'clicks' they know
what to look for as they have done for years since the comps board started.
.
so over 500 compers are regularly using the 'spam' button to get rid of self promotion threads!!!??? in that case it's worse than I thoughtalthough I'm surprised there's only one or two admitting to it?

From the Forum Rules
What's spam?
Forum users mustn't post comments more than once on the forum (the only exception is members of the MSE Team; when needed). It's called spamming and most internet forums forbid it. Where spam is reported to the Forum Team, the posts are deleted and the user's posting privileges may be removed. Please don't quote any post you believe is spam, as this causes the team more work.MSE_Andrea wrote: »Hi guys
Just a reminder to please only use the spam button for posts that are spam.
Using them to delete someone elses' posts when you don't like what they're saying is not appropriate and could result in the Forum Team having to take measures against you as well as or instead of the person in question.
Thanks!
