I find front doors that open from the outside by the handle bizzare.

    Why?

Why, they are more convenient than doors with no handles.

It means that you have the choice to lock the door or leave it latched closed but don't need a key to get in. Ours is like that, useful if we are out the front or when we are expecting visitors.

If I'm out the front I flip the latch up & the same bolts that pop out to lock it to the frame, pop out & stop it closing.
My visitors knock or ring the bell.

Because people can just walk in from the street/road.

Our postie is excellent. He puts letters through the letter box or if we are at the gate hands them to us.

If our elderly neighbours put outgoing post in the letter box he will take it.

He has come to us for 20 years..he has never opened a door and entered...nor have any holiday cover post people.

But even old wood doors with yale locks, they are a key to open from the outside & a handle to turn from the inside.

Its just not the original Georgian one. Its still a cranky old one, not a Yale. It has a handle. On the outside ( in fact the handle is pretty defunct, but the lock is on its last legs too. :)

What do you do for a living... sell drugs?

    Only joking!

No, but I do receive a regular delivery of them. :rotfl:

Having a handle on the outside doesn't prevent you from locking the door when appropriate.

So you can't shut it properly? What stops it blowing open?

If I was out the front & wanted it shut, I would stick the key in the door or on the windowsill beside the front door.

Mine locks itself from the outside - by default.
I just don't need to bother with keys except to enter when I return.
I would actually feel quite "exposed" knowing anyone could walk in my front door.
  • I would not be happy either.
