There is no justifiable reason for the postwoman to open someone's door and walk inside their property in order to deliver something. If it were all above board and not open to question then it would be a more common occurrence amongst posties. I have never known one to do this. I wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her, and if she were my postie she would find the door locked when she tried her luck!

As far as I can make out, I don't think the post women is actually walking inside the property? That I would probably have a problem with. But if she's just opening the door and popping them in, then that doesn't bother me....although I can see why it would bother some.

Just lock your door! Or if you really don’t like locking it, get a chain put on it. Or just say to her do you mind not letting yourself in please’.

And thats you, but suki1964 on the other hand actively wants this sort of behaviour and so clearly not everyone is the same or has the same experience

Fine that you wouldnt trust her but you still havent said why she is untrustworthy. Sounds more like the fact she's simply more used to people like suki1964 than you who appreciate the "extra service".

Not seen the other thread. I don't lock my front door as I work from home which involves sitting at a desk right next to the front door.
I live in a very rural area and it is VERY different from towns/cities as people don't always lock their door at night let alone during the day. Kids leave their bikes out and parcels are left in the porch with no fear of them disappearing. Totally different to how life was when we lived in a city.

I'd just like to say please don't assume rural means safe. It IS different to city crime. Opportunist bike collection is less common.

But there IS crime in the country side. A lot of it is confined to farms and horse owners ( machinery thefts/tack thefts/ rustling) and some to large horses, more of the same and some horrid other sorts of crimes.

But there are other risks. We live in quite an isolated position and some one was raped in a car down the road from us some time ago. I wish we had known to help. :( And isolated houses make great places to break and enter, or for kids to try and find somewhere to loitre and smoke ( stupidly, hay/straw barns seem comfortable places for this) or to come and steal anything not welded down with.

And yes, there are common and standard walk in burglaries, Just like in towns.
  • If I'm near the front door I will sometimes have it open wide and then I have found that post has usually been placed on the carpet inside the door.

None of the post people have attempted to open the door though.

I think that's probably fairly standard procedure for a semi-rural area.

I would object to someone just opening a shut door and keep it locked, so that they couldn't do so.

I have found things are a bit different in this area generally and its wise to keep my front door locked generally if I want to be sure people don't just walk in. I've jumped out of my skin before now when I was working in a room to find that a workman had just turned up/done a bit of work I had hired him for and had walked into my house and come up behind me to tell me he'd finished it.

Criminals travel so while a local might not open your door (day or night) there is nothing to say that someone else won't. Insurance might not pay out either.

Just lock the door. If you're not fussed about security, leave the key in the lock (indoor side). Hardly takes much effort to turn the key once you've shut the door.

I have never lived anywhere where I would not lock my front door, so never had this problem.
Don't you invalidate your insurance by leaving your door unlocked?

I think the postwoman is fairly stupid to do this on a round she is unfamiliar with.

I live in a rural location and the post people are often nervous to go through people's gates in case of dogs never mind opening doors.

I doubt many people in my village lock their doors when they are in, and it does not invalidate your house insurance to leave a door unlocked.
