I'm not sure that the police would be remotely interested as the postie is leaving things, not taking them away.

There again, they might want to charge you with assault.
Have you ever locked yourself out by accident?! I've seen that happen many a time with those kind of doors as in people have forgotten to take the key with them and the door has slammed shut or something!

I didn't think as many people had them kind of doors anymore? I guess that's why I was bemused when you said what you said last night!

No, if I'm leaving I take keys (I need them to drive) if I'm out the front gardening or clearing out the car or something I will put it on the latch.
I don't know anyone that has the other type except one couple I know & any people we know mutually find their set up odd & won't leave their bags in the hall if they visit them (they live in a large town).
I'm a southerner (south east) I wonder if this is a regional thing?

I think I must live in Kim kim's road lol. I have just done a virtual walk up mine and am surprised to see a few with handles (I can at least picture what you mean now) but most are just the slam shut ones (and yes, my OH has locked himself out and had to force the door in).

Couldn't work out what you meant but yep I suppose the newer ones do have those little handles on. Oooh I'm not sure I'd like that. I much prefer having one without a handle (although do worry about leaving keys indoors).
I think my sister has one but am sure she can lock the outside door but have the inside one able to be just pushed and opened from the inside. That's how some of my neighbours got burgled last year (including my sis in another area one Christmas) - locked from the outside, but something shoved through the letterbox to pull the handle down from the inside.

  • I have never lived anywhere where I would not lock my front door, so never had this problem.
Don't you invalidate your insurance by leaving your door unlocked?

Not normally if you live alone/ only with family members. If you have non-family members living with you then its common for there to need to be signs of forced or violent entry for theft claims as an endorsement.

That said, there are budget policies that add the endorsement to all policies so it becomes their standard wording.

Nobody is wandering in anyone's house!! She's opening the door and putting the mail in. Some people are ok with that and some people aren't, it's personal choice. But people keep on saying she's entering the house, and she's not. If she was, then that's a whole different ball game.

If she was, then yes I'd agree with you to report her. But as it is simply opening the door and putting the mail inside, reporting her seems harsh when a word with her would do.

The second time I was in the back garden and came in to find the letters on my desk.

THAT is what was put on the first post. No, she isn't 'dropping them on the mat'. She entered the house and put them on a desk! And being as the OP has a letterbox there is no excuse.

Wow, I didn't expect such a response but my initial post was due to the fact that I was unsure how I should feel about the postie walking in and it seems views vary greatly.
I would like to clarify that the door is not left open just unlocked. I laughed it off the first time the postwoman opened the door because she seemed genuinely shocked she had done it and apologised and said she was daydreaming she was at her own home. I therefore got the impression she knew it wasn't acceptable.
I wouldn't feel so weird about it if the letters were too large to fit through the letterbox but she has done it for standard letters.
Things are definitely different in rural areas but my regular postie who everybody knows has never opened my front door. Therefore I find it strange that the holiday cover does. I don't even think it's to check on the villagers as she never chats.

I will keep the door locked for now although that means I may not be able confront her unless I am actually there when she tries to open the door again. So I think I might mention it to my regular postie as he will know her character and maybe have a little word on the quiet.
I think I would feel more threatened if it was a male postie opening my door but then I guess they would not feel so comfortable doing it. There are a few vulnerable older people in the village so I hope they are ok with her behaviour.

To me, this is the weirdest part of her behaviour. If she did it as it's just that sort of area and seen as normal that's one thing (I'd hate it, but that's not the point). But she seems to have made up a truly terrible excuse when caught out, then carried out doing the same behaviour but interestingly when you were not close to the door (in the back garden).

Hmmmmm, actually opening the door and waltzing in does seem weird. Even my own friends and neighbours don't do that.

I have lived in small town, large village, and city and large town, and have never known a postie do this. As some have said; if the door is actually open, then I wouldn't mind him chucking the mail inside for quickness and simplicity, but not to actually open the door and come in. I would find that intrusive and a bit cheeky.

I wouldn't know what to say though, so would actually just lock the door. When the regular postie comes back, I would mention it. I would not actually report her though, as I don't think she is doing anything maliciously, but I would say something to the regular postie, and maybe he can mention it to her, that's it's unacceptable to do this.

I have many wonderful positives and not one of them has ever let themselves into my house uninvited. Nor has a single delivery driver. In fact only a burglar would do that. Why haven't you complained ?
