I am also rural - and have been all my life. My postman signs for my parcels, drops back at the end of his shift to discuss chickens, and takes my post on occasion.

He has however never felt the need to wander into my house!

It is completely unacceptable under all and any circumstances.

I wouldn't be confronting the post woman, I would be reporting her to the post office.

I find it incredible that so many people are 'ah, it's the country, you are out of step of course it's fine' - I'd like to see them find someone wandering around in their house when they run through from the shower because they've forgotten a towel and have no clothes on!

Report her. For her own protection if nothing else, can you imagine if someone forgetful thought they were down some money in their purse and she had been tootling around in there without permission!

you shouldn't have to lock your door. She should stay on the outside unless invited in.

I`m surprised that anybody, no matter where they live in this country now, DOESN`T keep their doors locked front and back at all times.

My keys are kept on the shelf in the hall and it's no trouble to pick them up as I walk past to answer the door. I would feel very vulnerable with an unlocked door.

But mine is locked, by default, from the outside.
That's my point, it's easier assuming like you, you want your door locked, to have a key on one side & a handle on the other.
Then you can just push shut behind you & it's locked, or open in an instant without key (that would bother me in case of fire).

My back garden is gated & fenced off, 6 foot all round.
If I unlock the French doors & I'm in for the day (weekend) then I'll leave them unlocked, unless it's the winter & I know I won't be in & out. But if it's a week day & I'm working I would lock it.
But I do leave them unlocked if I'm likely to be in & out.
Saying that I have forgotten to lock & left open day & night :-(

I'm rural too - so the front door is invariably unlocked virtually the whole day outside "gone to bed" hours!

There are others (not posties!) who take our open door policy a little too liberally - I do have to remember to keep a sense of modesty even in my own house!

That's why I wouldn't do it, I wouldn't want to feel anyone could walk in on me.
I live alone I never close much less lock the bathroom door. I might sit watching TV in my underwear.
I wouldn't feel comfortable if I knew someone could just walk in.
I live in a small village too.

Now if she looked like this for me I would be more than happy to allow her to enter my house and much more to boot.

She seems to be letting herself into that post box.

Nobody is wandering in anyone's house!! She's opening the door and putting the mail in. Some people are ok with that and some people aren't, it's personal choice. But people keep on saying she's entering the house, and she's not. If she was, then that's a whole different ball game.

If she was, then yes I'd agree with you to report her. But as it is simply opening the door and putting the mail inside, reporting her seems harsh when a word with her would do.

Have you ever locked yourself out by accident?! I've seen that happen many a time with those kind of doors as in people have forgotten to take the key with them and the door has slammed shut or something!

I didn't think as many people had them kind of doors anymore? I guess that's why I was bemused when you said what you said last night!

Well I would say and I think 99.9% of people would say, if she opens the door and crosses the threshhold
    she`s entering the house (uninvited).

Having said that, this thread is verging onto the rediculous.
All the OP has to do is lock the door.
