Perhaps ask how it benefitted the parents. After all, Baptism as an infant is unlikely to negatively impact a child in any way.
Okay, so how does it benefit parents?Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

Yes, I know there are humanist naming ceremonies, but a lot of people don't really know what they are and find it easier to default to the one they know about.
I wonder too, if there is some lurking primal fear around what might happen if you don't have your child baptised.
Another reason for some parents is that they are conventional, it's what you 'do' and it ticks boxes, in their opinion for a conventional future and possible school opportunities, and being seen to be the right sort.
And of course finally, there are those who are Christians for whom it has meaning and it is a means of their children being welcomed into the church family.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -

My friends who are my Goddaughter's parents had her christened because they, as believers, honestly and genuinely believed that it was the right thing for her. They were being good parents and doing what they felt was right for their daughter.
We all have different ideas of what that entails. Some people don't agree with having inoculations. Some people bring their children up to be vegetarians. All caring parents do what they think is the right thing.
So, it benefits the parents inasmuch as they can be satisfied that they have done what they believe to be the best for their children.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Like I said before, the none believers don't need much of a reason to bash Christians. Christians are great targets for mocking, and often are mocked by the obnoxious and argumentative and objectionable atheists.
I would love to see these people openly - and not anonymously - mock and ridicule Muslims. Yeah right ... :rotfl:
I am not saying that ALL atheists are how I describe BTW, but some are, and a few on HERE certainly are!(•_•)

I'll openly question any form of organised religion. I despise them all equally.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

Yeah, sure. :rotfl: All the Christianity bashers are far too cowardly to bash certain religions, especially Islam. But for some reason Christianity is always mocked by the bashers.
And if you despise Christianity, then why on earth would you come on to a thread about it?(•_•)

Why does it bother people so much that other people have a strong faith?
And why do people bother going into ANY discussion about Christianity if they're an atheist?
It's almost as if people do it JUST to mock and berate Christians. Bit sad and lame IMO.(•_•)

But just because YOU despise all reglions does not give you the right to publicly denigrate those who do have beliefs.0
