What can I do about neighbours smoking cannabis ?

Hello all
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice or point me in the right direction as I really don't know what to do

I live in a house with a very small garden/outside area and next door are constantly smoking cannabis. I have lived here for 3 years and it has only started recently - last 6 weeks - with the son of about 16 and the parents just don't care. I have two very young children who can not enjoy our garden because of the smell and my eldest has started asking what the smell is. Now they can hear him asking next door but just don't care. I have horrible thin windows and the smell is coming through and also any washing I put out side is reeking of the stuff. I have asked them but they just shrug me away and don't want to know or care.my landlord wasn't any help ither saying it's not his problem. I really don't know what to do. It's so embarrassing having people over and them asking where the smell is coming from,

What can I do? Is there anything I can do?

Thank you for reading

    Speak to the police.
  • Hi tenyearstogo thank you for your reply.
Is thee anything the police can do, if you know? I wasn't sure that because it is on private property that they could actually do anything?

Dont go to the police, phone crimestoppers so you are anonymous. Mention things like people coming and going at all times of day and night and also say there is a constant smell of cannabis. They will log it as a potential factory/dealing house and they will be raided. If you go to the police and complain, they will know it was you who complained.

Given that the OP has already mentioned her objections to the neighbours, they'll probably put 2 and 2 together in any event.

It's illegal even on private property.
  • Hi everyone thank you for my replys they are very useful. I didn't even think of crime stoppers I will definitely give them a ring.
At the end of the day I shouldn't have to put up with it and neither should my children so I will do everything I can to try and put a stop to it. It really is getting me down and I don't want to feel like this in my own home

Cannabis is illegal to possess, grow, distribute or sell in the UK without the appropriate licences.[20] It is a Class B drug, with penalties for unlicensed dealing, unlicensed production and unlicensed trafficking of up to 14 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.[20] The maximum penalty for unauthorised or sanctioned possession is five years in prison.[20] It is, however, worth noting that a "Cannabis warning" can be issued for small amounts of cannabis (generally less than 1 ounce of herbal cannabis, or a slightly higher quantity of hashish) if it is found to be for personal use. This entails the police keeping a record, albeit one which carries no fine and does not show up on CRB checks (although may well show up on a CRB anyway due to poor police administration).[21] From 2004 to 2009 it was a Class C drug.[22]

Still, a complaint to the police in person will be logged, crimestoppers is anonymous. They can suspect it was her but without any proof they wont know.

Police wouldn't tell them who logged the complaint though.

And yes OP private property makes no difference. If they were chopping up bodies they can't use private property as a defence. Criminal is criminal.

The issue is that a small amount is just usually a caution. However, if they are using as much as you say then many will also do some dealing on the side or they might actually be growing the stuff which will lead to a much harsher punishment.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

I think you should be more forceful with your neighbours.

Don't let them get away with 'shrugging their shoulders'

Tell them straight that if it doesn't stop, you will go to the police.....
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

You could also try reporting it to social services.

Anything you do though is likely to start a dispute with your neighbours, which could make life more unpleasant.

And if you own your own home, these crime reports will shoe up if a potential buyer check out the crime stats for the area.

The Police are a waste of time IMHO. They won't want to know.
