The car tax as you put it is paid up front when it is due Or you can opt to pay in two six month payments But again from the day it starts NOT 6 months in advance of the day it starts

So lets get this straight then.

If TVL allowed you to pay your 12 month licence fee in six instalments, starting from the date you need it, and then no payments at all for the next six months, that would make you happy?

    A schedule like this?

    Month 1 to 6 - £24
    Month 6 to 12 - £0

Then it starts again for the next licence period.

That's what you want to do? I think the vast majority of people that pay monthly wouldn't like that. They prefer to pay 12 equal payments, and the only way to do that is with the current six months in advance and six months in arrears system.

If you don't like the monthly system that is offered, then you could pay quarterly and include the additional fee.

Or failing that you could pay the whole amount upfront, and design your own monthly budget by paying an appropriate amount into a savings account in preparation for the next coming bill.

But when TVL were told as far as I can see the action against her should have been cancelled

    No it shouldn't.

Buying a licence today, does not mean you weren't committing an offence when you watched/recorded live TV yesterday.

I think you need to re-read murphyb007's original post.

At the time her partner was caught by the "TV Licence inspector", there was no licence in force at the address.

A licence was obtained after the visit.

No, one licence will suffice, but in murphyb007's case, at the time of the visit, there wasn't any licence in force at the address, hence why he was prosecuted.

I am FULLY aware there was NO licence at the time As I've said I suspect it was his partners name on the form that is why it went to court But it also substantiates one of the points I made earlier that was ridiculed and that IS it can go to court without further communication ( or ignored letters ) from the TVL

Actually your WRONG even TVL say when they find " your breaking the law " they first advise you to get a licence

They do indeed advise you to get a licence, but they don't say that getting one will prevent prosecution.

as it seems he DID the so called crime IS then cancelled Or should have been

How on earth do you "cancel" a crime

Only when you've voluntarily signed a confession.

I guess you are one of the folk that come under my comment earlier

You read but DONT digest what you see

I am NOT objecting to paying a weekly ( as I do ) or a monthly as others probably do What I AM objecting to is paying 6 months in advance

Ie 6 months for example Jan to June 2014 then 6 months July to to dec 2014 For a licence that runs from August 1st 2014 to 31st July 2015 as mine does
But the main post is the ever increasing aggressive nature of the TVL letters
They even say that on their site except they do not use the word aggressive

It went to court because, instead of ignoring TVL, murphyb007's partner chose to interact with TVL, in the person of the "TV licence inspector" who knocked on the door.

It seems you are too! Given that the example you provide ...
Ie 6 months for example Jan to June 2014 then 6 months July to to dec 2014 For a licence that runs from August 1st 2014 to 31st July 2015 as mine does
... appears to broadly match the example I gave above.

    Please answer this question:

If you have a valid licence and you are up to date with ALL your payments, that is up to date as TVL require them NOT as you would like it to be, then why are you getting any letters at all? What is the EXACT reason TVL appear to believe you do not have a valid licence or payment schedule in place?

    Quite.

No communication with TVL (either by letter/phone/email, or in person with their doorstep callers) means no summons.

Those are the terms under which you have chosen purchase a licence.

If you don't agree with those terms, you have 2 legal options.

    1. Pay in full, annually.

    2. Stop paying and go Legally Licence Free.
