Nice People 12: Nice in Nice

I need to replace the ceiling light in MIL's bungalow. Just bought one of these:
I wanted a bit of bling, and that's about as much bling as you can get for £45.
That will look nice providing there isn't an artexed ceiling. Hopefully the patterns won't clash if it does.I think MR16 lights are the spawn of the devil. You may have to replace the transformer when you replace teh bulbs with LED. It's worth checking with the suppliers, as some may have the circuitry included.
We have fluorescent strip lights in the kitchen. They provide an excellent shadow-free light for doing complicated and delicate things, like cooking. The fittings were put in in 1998, and they are now well past their useful lifetime.
Thinking about replacing them with these:
But, I would really like to see those 'in the flesh' before deciding.
Mmm... interesting, same dilemma here. Before we moved out of old house we replaced the kitchen fluorescent strip light with a downlighter halogen spot bar. It was a PITA and left shadows all over the place. I was glad to move for that alone. This house (moved here 8 years ago) has a strip light too and I would like to change it but DH says "woah, not going down that route again" and there's not a mass of choice.

We're slowly switching over. Not helped by the huge number of energy savers RP bought thinking they were the future. We could dimly illuminate a tower block.
Hmmm... could you put a few in dimmable light fittings and claim you blew them up accidentally? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I spent a couple of hours this morning tearing my hair out on the DVLA website. My dad spent several hours last night last night doing the same before calling me down to help.
They've launched a BETA version of their website at the same time as the change re tax discs. Guess what has happened.... now you don't need to wait for a tax disc to appear everyone has left it until the last minute and the website keeps crashing. I must have put the data in a good 20-25 times before I finally got to the payment page and then that crashed 3 times too.

Yeah, poorly thought out . Most people wouldn't have even known there was no tax disc any more .... and the news said the website's struggling.0 -
Love the way you have incorporated NP themes like PN's deckchairs, Lydia's blackboard, fc's boldness patterning, lir's desire for weird lighting (are they really bowler hats?), 2 oven's for GDB's wife, dream bedroom for michael's DDs, BBQ & patio for Gen, plenty of book shelves for viva, study for NDG, mas and Nikks (I won't mention the unmentionable), room at the side for bugs to park the trucks. Easy access open plan living for Sue. Just calling on maggie to plant a few flowers....
Apologies to anyone I've left out.
There's also the pretty copper-insided light shade that I was eyeing up in IKEA (was out of stock) a couple of months ago...
And I love my mummy to the moon and back (or sometimes to infinity and beyond and back again).
Looks lovely Doozergirl. And I like the colour of the paint in the garden. Noticed a floorplan too - agree with the other photos (there are 2 of the front? If there is a number limit you could swap one of those?).
I still want to steal those hanging lights from the garden too!0 -

When I found it I recognised the turquoise wall behind the BBQ outside, so I knew I'd got the right one.
(Can delete that if you'd like me to.)Anyone know about LEDs? I have 19 (!) light bulbs ( mr16 ) on one switch in my kitchen. So 35w x 19 = 665w with the lights on (less the ones that have blown). They are not very good. I'm wondering if it is worth the investment in replacing them with LEDs. LEDs are 4w each so only 76W for the lot.
So I'm saving 600w in total at an outlay of a £5 each, say £100. Electricity is about 13p per Kwh, so 6 hours a day is £1.30 saving - 80 days and I'm then in profit.
Question is can I change them all out with no need to do anything else and can I mix and match while I decide if they produce decent light?
Don't see why you shouldn't mix and match. I have mixed and matched LED bulbs with other kinds of bulbs in my house.
I get the ones that claim to be warm white. The colour seems fine to me, and they switch on quickly and make a reliable light level.

Hate energy savers.
Let's face it, I prefer candles.
A friend of mine has removed the light fittings in her main living room and replaced them with candle holders on the walls (are those called candle sconces???). The wiring is still there behind the plasterwork, so if she sells the place the new owners will be able to have electric light again.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I mentioned on a previous npthread I'd been to visit an amazing house where the ceiling lights had been restored to candle chandeliers. Big baskets of beeswax candles in the kitchen. Gorgeous. Really wanted to do it here. Fir was pro too.
We decided however it was impractical and dangerous with RP. I know we will not get the opportunity to change back to candle and its not a great idea for sale. I hate being practical.
The one point in favour is if I do go on to lose sight later it won't bother be so much! :rotfl:0 -
I recognise the sliding door wardrobe in the bedroom from IKEA. I see your clothes are visible through the glass too. It annoys me and makes me wish I had bought the mirror doors that were out of stock that day.
I don't like furniture with sort-of-see-through-but-not-very-well doors, either. LNE had a sideboard like that. I have not incorporated it into my house.Getting there.
I really love my new hat.

What do you mean "noticed a floorplan"? I can't see one. Is your post a typo? Sorry - I'm muddled now.

No. I can't see a floorplan on rightmove. Can see the study in the description- no picture of it.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
