The thing with what people've got is that a lot of time it's not about "style" .... it's about what was available, what they saw/found, that was in their budget and did the job in the few weeks/months they were looking for such an item and felt willing/able to have that one and get it home.

    If that makes sense.

One day I'll have a (bed) bedside cabinet .... it'll be the nicest one that caught my eye, at a price I felt was OK for a bedside cabinet .... that's available when I decide I should get one. It won't be stylish, or wow; it might not even "match" ... but it'll do the job as best as can be expected for the time slot I was looking for one.

I gave a really lovely bedside table to a friend who paints stuff for sale on ebay. I got it from a flea market or car boot or something. I'd painted it once and liked it, but realised it was sitting in the barn and I have enough on my plate, she took a chair too. :)

I'm not that keen on our bedside tables, they are fine, lovely even, but don't suit our room. When the extension is done I'll have a yellow bedroom I think and they'll go in there.

Somebody on HutH earlier in the week did this - and he said "I replaced them with 3watt LEDs once I realised"

Bottom line is - you can't beat a good old fashioned, 1960s, proper 100watt bulb, slap bang in the middle of the ceiling :)

I think MR16 lights are the spawn of the devil. You may have to replace the transformer when you replace teh bulbs with LED. It's worth checking with the suppliers, as some may have the circuitry included.

We have fluorescent strip lights in the kitchen. They provide an excellent shadow-free light for doing complicated and delicate things, like cooking. The fittings were put in in 1998, and they are now well past their useful lifetime.

Thinking about replacing them with these:

But, I would really like to see those 'in the flesh' before deciding.

Anyone know about LEDs? I have 19 (!) light bulbs ( mr16 ) on one switch in my kitchen. So 35w x 19 = 665w with the lights on (less the ones that have blown). They are not very good. I'm wondering if it is worth the investment in replacing them with LEDs. LEDs are 4w each so only 76W for the lot.

So I'm saving 600w in total at an outlay of a £5 each, say £100. Electricity is about 13p per Kwh, so 6 hours a day is £1.30 saving - 80 days and I'm then in profit.

Question is can I change them all out with no need to do anything else and can I mix and match while I decide if they produce decent light?

I swapped out everything in our pretty gloomy house with LEDs only to the next one up and I have a noticeably better quality of light with much lower (claimed) power usage.

I really like the quality of light from an LED. It's a really nice white white. Not yellowy like old bulbs or a kind of crappy grey like from the energy savers.

I quite like the warmth from old style bulbs. I think the white light from LEDs looks wrong in my house, and houses like it.

    Hate energy savers.

Let's face it, I prefer candles.

I think I've gone native, I finally bought a proper hat:
    <snip>

I have problems since the radiotherapy when the sun hits the right side of my face and especially my ear. The hat is made from 14 rabbit pelts, a strip of 'roo leather, a little croc leather and some silk inside the hat. It's great.

Oooo! Super hat! :) I've been wondering how you're doing - is the pain improving?
My dad turns 70 this year, he's been a bit shakey for a while, I think I knew exactly what it was but was hoping it was just general signs of ageing - it has now been confirmed as Parkinson's.

I think you've had useful info and suggestions from other folks, but just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear your Dad's diagnosis.

Got through to the second round of interviews in a local job, not going to get excited this time as this happened last month for another job and after thinking I had a great chance, in the end I got the not at this time letter.

Mind you, I suppose it is better than falling/failing at the first hurdle!

Well done Sue! Fingers crossed it will go well - when is the interview? We can all send Vibes for good outcome. :)

You've just moved from me spending £100 on replacing bulbs to replastering my ceiling!

Where is the transformer and how do I know if it needs replacing?

The pain seems to have hit a plateau at a point where it's quite annoying but quite bearable too.

I'm really trying to get some fitness back and that's yielding some great results. I'm down to sleeping 8.5 hours a night now and I can run for the train without needing to have a nap at work.

    Getting there.

I really love my new hat.

We use the wide beam led 230v gu10s warm white everywhere and they are great about 2 quid a bulb from eBay. First batch many only lasted 12 months, more re e t set have lasted at least 24. They are not dimmable. Our leccy bill is about 35 per month despite being very profligate with leaving stuff on.
    I think....

    This sounds good.

We're slowly switching over. Not helped by the huge number of energy savers RP bought thinking they were the future. We could dimly illuminate a tower block.

The transformer will be in the ceiling, but accessible through the little hole where the lamp sits. I'm not sure that you'll need to make any changes, other than swapping the bulbs. Why not ring up a lighting shop and ask them?
