It's a thing I've noticed many times how the truly talented see their limits much more clearly than the less talented (who often think their powers are boundless).

I read a figure somewhere about how many people with depression die from it. Horrifying.

Depression/suicide is the biggest single killer of men under 35. It's a terrible disease and the focus on it is pitiful.

    In other news...
My dad has finally decided to apply for a sheltered flat. He's been on the list for years, so should be right at the top by now, so is quite likely to get allocated the one he's decided to put in for. He hopes to move in before it gets cold this autumn. So then we will have his house to deal with, and potentially lots of furniture etc as the four of us share out the stuff he can't fit into his new place. There's quite a lot of really quite nice stuff in his house (inherited from his parents etc), and moving from a 5-double-bedroom house to a 1-double-1-single-bedroom flat will mean there's a lot he can't take with him.

I feel a bit weird about my childhood home not being there anymore, even though I am certain this is the right move for him.

That has been exactly the story of my life for the last year. Mum went into a sheltered flat last February (they call it 'service flat' over there) She moved out of a 4 bed detached. It's amazing how much stuff people can gather over a lifetime. I spent so many days there emptying, dismantling, driving to the tip, charities picking things up...and with mum not being too bright in her head anymore, deciding which things were 'needed' wasn't easy!
Anyway, the house is up for sale now. Really happy with mum in flat. She seems to enjoy it also.

Any other NP put the heating on?
No, but I did put my hoodie on the past few mornings for doggy walk. I can't remember when I last wore it, must have been early June...it's been such a nice summer.

I find it really hard to understand how he could have taken his own life. He's a major star, very successful, with everything to live for. Depression is such an ugly illness. He presumably just could not see how wonderful he was.

You're not meant to understand. Depression isn't understandable. As DG said, it lies. A friend of a friend lost her husband to it recently - amazing bloke, loving husband, devoted father, valued and respected at work, tons of friends, lover of football - to watch, to play, to coach with boys the age of his own sons (3 of them 7-13), who all thought he was the most encouraging coach imaginable. Everything to live for. When he was in a good patch, he knew that. When it lied to him, he couldn't see anything straight. It's vile whoever it gets in its clutches, and heartbreaking for the family. I hope the media give Robin Williams's family the privacy they've asked for.

    Thank you. That's encouraging. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Not sure I could cope with the house in Saddleworth. It has a butlers sink and an aga, which are my two pet hates. I remember the butlers sink from my childhood, and how much nicer the stainless steel one was that we replaced it with. But that's very petty of me. Apart from that, it has lovely views, and it's a great house.

Whatever gender or age..a life in mental pain and without hope may make the abyss of bringing it all to a stop the easiest choice.

Do you need gated communities in that town?

Is there a lawless contingent wandering the streets or an underclass in a township/favela/suburb that pose a threat?

Or is it to keep gated community residents in? This same approach is taken in care homes specialising in dementia.

If there are fabulous onsite leisure facilities..own pool, gym, golf club etc OK. Otherwise I don't get it. It seems a lot of money to keep small boys from kicking a ball on communal garden or parking.

Apart from that bloody furrener in his decrepit old Mazda on his way to Sainsburys once a week, it looks perfectly safe.
