The only thing you did wrong was opening the letters. That's illegal. Not that in practice anyone is going to do anything about it, so don't worry.

You should simply have returned them to sender, or redirected them if you knew the occupiers address.

Anything more than that is NOT your responsibility.
We need NDG or yorkie or someone like that. :)

I'm not actually sure it is illegal. I think it is if you do not have something like 'reasonable cause' or do it 'to cause harm' or something.

I'm not going to try looking it up though!

S84 of the Postal Services Act 2000.

There is a 'reasonable excuses' clause, but I doubt it would apply in this case.

Ironically, if you said you opened it by accident the reasonable excuse clause kicks in... i.e. you didn't realize it wasn't addressed to you. Which is why it's practically unheard of for anyone to be prosecuted.

Just got to the bottom of this page on catch-up (sorry, not able to contribute as much with the studying having to take priority at the moment).

    S.84 has 2 offences

    a) intentionally and without reasonable excuse opening a letter in the course of its transmission. Doesn't apply here as the letter has been delivered to the correct address.

    b) intending to act to a person’s detriment and without reasonable excuse, opening a postal packet which you know or reasonably suspect has been incorrectly delivered.

There is debate about whether it has been incorrectly delivered as it has been delivered to the correct address. Irrespective of this, there was no intention to act to detriment and so again this doesn't apply.

It really is just inaccurate to say that opening a letter is, per se, illegal because that is not the case.

Aren't dark cars something like 10 times more accident-prone than light ones?

Do white cars have more accidents in the snow?

Well, if you're wrong. As a welcome home present, it would be great if the front door is turquoise. Paint and undercoat will be in the garage :)

There is a programme about building the canary wharf cross rail station on bbc2 at the moment. My office building keeps appearing in the background; I usually watch them building away when I'm having my breakfast in the morning.

She is fine. Apart from her toes, which we still haven't got to the bottom of. I might try a different vet. We are still feeding her what you regard as McDonald's every day. She still wears the buster, which is starting to look extremely grubby.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Is your new home near the cross rail route?
