Oh and the Dutchie/Aussie thing reminds me. Remember P@k1gate? One of the idiot royals called his mate a P@k1. Aussies didn't understand the problem: "I'm an Aussie from Australia, what the heck else do you call someone from Pakistan? Pakistani? Bit of a mouthful there mate."

    It's about intent, isn't it?

So in this country, unless you've been in a cave for 40 years, you know that "Paki" is considered offensive, and you should be taking it into account when using the word.

Similarly, I suppose, in India, the common short is "Pak" and in "India - Pak cricket match / war / argument".

Ah! Thanks for explaining. My two brothers aren't colour blind either. I did inherit my father's astigmatism.

Goes to show, I suppose, that having 3 sons doesn't constitute a statistically valid sample? Because only 1/3, 2/3 or all can inherit astigmatism, not 1/2 (-:

OH says he understands that El Al airliners have some anti-missile systems on them. But he doesn't know if those are for the type of seriously military missile probably used in Ukraine.

Well, unless either you've been in a cave or else you're only little and have lived your life so far amongst people who don't use the word.

It was one of those situations that parents come across where the child asks "why?" and you suddenly realise that explaining why involves putting into words an awareness that you've had for years but have never had to articulate before.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

OH says he understands that El Al airliners have some anti-missile systems on them. But he doesn't know if those are for the type of seriously military missile probably used in Ukraine.

Part of the El Al fleet have automatic launch detection and countermeasures equipment installed for flying into high risk locations. As do a couple of other airlines that operate in similar locations, and a few VIP aircraft.

AFAIK though it's pretty rudimentary and designed to combat short range man portable infra red missiles.

It works by detecting the launch, tracking the missile, and dispersing flares as decoys for the infra red guidance sensor.

Some national aviation authorities have prohibited the carrying of live flare dispersal systems on civilian passenger aircraft due to the obvious fire hazard, hence why not all the fleet and routes carry them.

The second generation systems are laser based, and started being installed in the last year or so.

Neither system would work on the larger and more sophisticated radar guided missiles used in this case however.

I did a quick google, couldn't find anything current. Found that website and it was asking for a postcode. Didn't like just having the start of the postcode. It was just a suggestion :)

    Glad you're home early.

I got an email address from GDB.... sent email earlier. Heard nothing yet. That one was to a named person.

You need to aim high as per my message.

    Try Gavin Patterson.

    Trust me it will work.

Now confirmed the missile was fired from Territory controlled by Russian separatists.
