Interesting, I would have guessed that investment bankng would be a place where your ability to earn money for the company would over ride any other considerations.

Well I'm in asset management right now not investment banking. The fact is that senior management and front office in IBs is white, rich and male too however. Ditto insurance, mineral extraction, retail and catering. Those are the industries I know.

However, to look at how you make money in an investment bank: you make deals. People like to make deals with people like themselves. It ends up as white men dealing with white men. Have you never been in a decent corporate box? Lots of accents but only one colour and mostly one sex.

Quants etc are different of course as you can't see who you deal with. Anyone can make it there if they can get an in.

And now I've had to shut the patio door. The leaves I'd dug out of the drain earlier were small/shredded and wet, so I spread them out a bit to dry before putting them into my trug for garden waste..... thing is, there's an odd wind that comes round that corner and it's whipped them up into a never-ending whirlwind of tiny pieces.... that were then coming inside. I vacuumed the first lot up, turned round and another bunch had replaced them... so vacuumed those up and shut the door quick.

I don't mind having a go at stuff that's achievable, but the reality is I am a DIY nightmare :)

It's all about context really. If you use a word about someone's race to insult them then that's racist. If you use a word about someone's race to describe them then it isn't IMHO.

For example the word 'Pom' isn't racist whereas the phrase 'Pommie baastaad' is I think (although it isn't viewed as such in Aus who have some very strange ideas about what's racist)

    Er:
"Buy me another, you pommie baastaad" vs,
    "Don't hire him. He's a pom."

I think racism is about intent more than anything. All those jokes about Welsh sheep s**gers aren't racist because you don't intend anyone to take them seriously, and you like the person.

But just the word 'Welsh' could be racist, in the right context, if you're using it in the wrong way.

Strangely enough, I think I have one here... in the box beside me. Box of "random tools grabbed from dad's tools just before the house clearance came and took most stuff away en masse"

However.... what do you really think my chances of survival would be: perched up a ladder, poking about randomly in potentially live electrical thingies.....?

I think you are overstating the risk, PN. You are just as close to the dreaded electricity when you plug an appliance in, and you do that all the time without worry.

Hint: don't touch the blade when poking the thing in.

If you are really worried, wear gloves, but then the neon may not light up. Try it with a lamp at ground level first, until you are confident?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

On the contrary. I am petrified of plugging anything in. I've not dared turn the cooker on here yet... it could be some weeks. When the washing machine is finally fitted.... I'll be petrified every time I turn that on. I hate anything electrical.... luckily I am OK with a PC and a TV.

I wouldn't have known not to touch the blade.... I also wouldn't know where to poke it in .... and if it did light up I'd "jump" and fall off the ladder....

It's not going to happen. Fact.

I have enough electrical jobs now to try to find an electrician. Some of the ceiling light sockets need changing and I really want a garden light with a PIR so it's on/off/on with pir. He can also PAT test all my stuff and check the electrics on the house at the same time. So a full set of electrician jobs now ... when I can find one.

Very true. My point was about context rather than the actual choice of words. 'Pommie baastaad' is no more or less racist than n......r or p..i.

You get my point: it's basically the same as yours I think.

I've now emailed the BT lady .... so the next job is to build the fabric wardrobe.... I guess I should do that upstairs really. Back in a bit.

    Edit:
Well, that didn't go too well. Got all the bits out, lined them up and counted them as per instructions. All present.

First, join two plastics to four metals. Done.
Next, put the next four metals in place..... first one I attempted broke the plastic framework/corner completely.

    So, that's a !!!!!!!.

Bought it from Lidl, in Cornwall. Need to find where the receipt is now .... could be anywhere as I've moved!

I just want to cry really ... everything I try to achieve just ends in disaster.

Sitting here with a washing machine not plumbed in, a smashed bulb and no outside light, no stairs light, no living room light, no wardrobe as I just broke it .... no phoneline, no broadband. No curtains upstairs ... even the blow up mattress is "missing" (temporarily) the plug that you screw in to blow it up through.

    I daren't touch anything else :(

What surprises me is that it is fine to complain that the cabinet was male pale and stale - imagine the reaction if you suggested it was too female, coloured and radical.....It is this sort of done standard that fuels ukip and the London liberals are literally unable to see their double standards.

The Times had article this week, showing the new female ministers and discussion what each was wearing. Can't imagine an article discussing what shade of grey each man's suit is.

PN, you've not got lights in the hall and lounge as they're odd sockets. Not your fault, previous owners clearly didn't bother with them.

There is an outside light here (which is technically inside the lean to), has never worked, I've not got as far as checking whether it's just that the bulb has gone.

Washing machine - well, I've had a broken cooker that I've not even begun to deal with. It's been broken for about 10 weeks now.

You've only just moved in. Please don't be so hard on yourself.

Edit: oh, and it took me about 3 months to face arranging broadband
