I did tell her they can't come round because of the cat and she just ignored it as if to say well they're coming over anyway!

IShe was cool with that, and to be fair is a really nice woman now she realises that I am not some evil woman who will laugh while her son starves to death in an unironed shirt :rotfl::rotfl:

It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

I think I would be very tempted to allow the dogs to visit, and then on her return explain that the dogs were now in kennels traumatised because the cat did not take kindly to their arrival.
Then when M-I-L arrived with cookery books, I would look perplexed and encourage her to demonstate the recipies, filling up the freezer as she went :)

^^ Exactly this. I have learned not to waste my time arguing/reasoning/putting forward my thoughts when it comes to my MIL. I just listen to what she has to say and then do what I want to do.

Had to laugh at her buying you cook books, my MIL once showed me how to make a bed! :rotfl:

My MIL told me she couldn't believe I was having "obey" removed from the marriage vows!!

    All good ideas!!

I used to get on well with MIL til last year when we bought our own home, she says things like "your house would look really nice if you did it up properly" and "you need to keep moving up the property ladder, don't stay in the same house for long". Since then everything she says has become a big irritation.

Didn't she teach her son how to iron?

    Shameless brag:

My son can iron. I showed him a couple of times he's better than me now.

This is just me being a bit of a nosy parker but you mentioned that you've recently bought your first house together...did your mother-in-law gift you any money to help with the purchase?

I am reading this thread keenly so that I will not be the MIL from hell - I have three sons in their twenties. It took me ages to "train" (:D) their father in the domestic arts and I was determined that I wasn't going to be the household slave so as soon as they were old enough they were taught to cook, clean, iron etc. This all caused friction with my own MIL when she came to stay - she'd take over if she saw one of them doing a chore, tutting and glaring at me. I'd smile sweetly and say merrily that their wives would thank me one day, lol!

    I'll probably make different mistakes........:(
