  • Well, when I was initially exploring the concept in a conversation with my tutor at uni, AFAIK it started from me realising that I consistently confused (and confuse) Gunter Grass and Hermann Hesse. The idea of two German novelists having alliterative names with the same number of syllables (although with the wisdom of age I think Hesse is probably 2 sylls) was, and is, too much for my little brain. It did, however, make me think about memory. There are lots of theories about how we remember things - I'm sure you will have heard about people who take walks through mansions in their head to remember things (a bear in that room, a mermaid in the next, that sort of thing to remember lists) and people who definitely store things aurally (so that 'five' and 'nine' are likely to be confused, but not 'two' and 'six'). I have lots of experiences of trying to recall things where I can remember the rhythm of the word or phrase long before the answer comes up, so I know I must be storing the rhythm somehow. And I see other people, including non-musicians, processing memory in this way. So it's interesting to me that rhythm seems to be a part of this therapy.

That's very true. A lot of mnemonics are couched in rhythm, either in verse, or in a statement with a metre to it. Rhythmic speech is much easier to remember.

Really? Oh You Great Big Idiot, Valerie!

Which would you find easier to remember?

JM, I've only come across NLP once via a therapist who seemed a little out of his depth and hence stopped treatment part way through with little explanation, leaving the person rather in the lurch. Didn't exactly inspire confidence, although I guess that's the individual therapist rather than the treatment?

Gosh, I hope so. I honestly don't know all that much about it, but I do know there are some really shonky courses around where the credulous are trained to be an NLP 'practitioner' in about a weekend - which inspires no confidence in me at all! There may be a gold standard NLP which does fabulous things around somewhere, however!

(There are also some really low standard counselling courses around, for that matter - as they say in the adverts 'other low standard training courses are available' :D) I confess that I don't know whether there's a good professional regulatory body for NLP (and for that matter EMDR) but there are some good ones for counselling, including BACP.

Ha ha! I always learned 'Richard of York gained battles in vain'. I know someone who is autistic and I think also has brain damage, who cannot read things out in a silly rhythm at all - he doesn't understand how limericks hang together, for example.

    You're both right!

I changed the words to improve the rhythm!
    The original was......... /uu / u /uu /
    Mine was.................. /uu /uu /uu /

I also changed it to see if an unknown rhyme was easier to remember, compared with a line of prose, than a line you already knew!

Haybel, how did the appointment with the Health Visitor go? I hope she was reassuring.

Sorry, am a bit overdue with this repost.

Here is the suggested THREAD ETIQUETTE. By following this etiquette, all posters, whether new or existing, will feel safe, unpressured and respected..

    - This is a thread for support. We have discovered some good friends on here, but we promise always to welcome and include new people, and not to be cliquey.

    - People may make suggestions to help each other, and might even ask if the suggestions were helpful or have been carried out, but we'll really try not to nag each other or put too much pressure on.

    - The normal board rules about sexism, racism, homophobia etc. apply, but if we are careful we should be able to discuss almost anything without breaching board rules - so far we have discussed subjects ranging from child abuse to incontinence!

-If someone thinks that too much pressure is being applied, they can post the trigger word PENGUIN and flag up the fact that they believe there's a potential for someone feeling too nagged to do something. ANYONE could post PENGUIN if they felt there was a danger that suggestions were being enforced too much.

    - If you think something might be a PENGUIN, please post something like the green bit which follows.

"I would like to discuss something to do with [insert subject here], but I am concerned that this might be a trigger for some people. Is everyone OK if I post about that?"

Then LEAVE IT for at least an hour to allow people to respond. Then, when you post, repost the word PENGUIN above the discussion. Then post the penguiny bit in white! And the phrase END OF PENGUIN when you have finished.

It will look like this. You will be able to see the white text if you highlight it or if you quote it (so please don't quote a penguin!)

    PENGUIN

This is a penguin. A nasty, crotch biting penguin (CBT).
It isn't really, you can look

    END OF PENGUIN

IMPORTANT: It has been ascertained that some posters to this thread have found that there are certain subjects which act as triggers, precipitating a worsening of their condition.
To protect these posters, you are respectfully requested NOT to discuss these subjects on this thread:-

Religion. (Please note: it is recognised that everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and we respect those beliefs. It is only because of the fact that religion does act as a trigger for some posters, that we exclude it from discussion.)
N.B. Please don't even mention the name of the religion.

The afterlife. The reason for this is explained in this thread by one poster, and there will be others for whom this is a trigger.

We ask and thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

    .........:starmod:.....................................................................:starmod:................

It should be pointed out that if anyone is feeling very distressed or close to a crisis, they do not have to worry about what they are posting, or whether it is a penguin for someone else or not. In a crisis situation, just post! We wouldn't want anyone to feel that they couldn't ask for help in case it's a penguin! The penguin thing only applies to a general discussion situation.

    - More suggestions please.............We stress that we are suggesting that we AGREE some Thread Etiquette to HELP people who might feel anxious about posting, we are not trying to IMPOSE rules, just relating this to facilitating groups, so that people feel safe and able to participate as fully as they can.

    haybel and all,

May I suggest that, especially at this time of year, nobody gets offendedfor at least a month if a post isn't commented on or thanked. It doesn't mean that it isn't valued.

I can only skim read MSE at work, and hence I will comment on trivial things during the day sometimes to keep a connection with the thread but also to empty my mind there and then so it has space for the more serious stuff at other times.

Since Friday afternoon, I have been dealing with a teenager who has been having suicidal thoughts. The paperwork and meetings that I am gong to have to do early in the next week related solely to this matter will probably take me another 6 hours which will have to be fitted in around the rest of my normal work.

I also have people going to court this week and potentially losing their home.

I got a letter from hospital yesterday re DD and when I googled the consultant, I found that he is the cancer specialist. Now, my understanding (from further googling) is that if cancer were suspected DD's appointment would be within two weeks, so further googling has suggested that cancer specialists also investigate some non-cancer blood diseases, which behave similarly. I am stopping googling now though as it is getting to the point that it is unhelpful for me to do so.

I do feel guilty as I was the one who asked for experiences of EMDR and I haven't acknowledged you. But I honestly can't deal with it at the moment. I hope you have saved it somewhere and can repost it because I really did want to come back to it.

WaS, none of the occurrences in my life currently have been prompted by anything you have or haven't done.

(I sometimes don't reply to pm's either, JM! But again, no offence is intended).

I always value everybody's contribution to the thread. I often talk to real-life people about things I read here. I guess I am now in the happy/sad situation that I take you all for granted!
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • Haybel, I read your post, thought it informative and interesting, but did not have time at that moment to read more about it. However I have since looked it up and found out more. Thanks you for directing us to it and I'm sorry if I did not thank you at the time, I did mean to but if I didn't it was because I was busy.

Please forgive me if I have upset you, there was no way I meant to do that and I do agree with you that sometimes the mental health issues get passed over by the chat. I suppose we are human and make mistakes and sometimes get the balance wrong.

Once again I apologise for my part in your hurt.

  • Weekend Recovery Letter -

    From a friend

    Dear You,
At all the moments in my depression I never thought I would make any progress, never thought I would work, be able to sleep properly, talk to friends with my full attention nor be able to forget for a while that I was suffering. Happiness, smiling and laughing were not even on my radar; I was convinced they were never going to happen. Ever.
But they did. The last year has been awful with hospital stays, struggling with support services, adjusting my medication and pushing to get the help I needed but I am now working part time after 12 months being signed off, I am steady on my medication, my sleep has pretty much returned to normal and I can laugh and smile and see there is a future. If you are currently in the depths of deep depression you will maybe think 'That's great for you but this will never happen to me.' will I was that person too, never me I thought.
I am not saying I am fully recovered, I don't know what that means but things have changed dramatically, I want to live and that is the biggest change of all.
    Take care of yourself.
    A Friend.
Deal with things as they are, not as they should be.

Ha ha! Don't worry, I know that everyone will PM if they want to and not if they don't, or are busy :) It's been an exciting week!

Once again I apologise for my part in your hurt.

I think this is a really lovely sentence. It spoke to me, somehow, and brought tears to my eyes. I'm going to save it for when I need it (and I am bound to, sadly!)

Today is my birthday! And it has a big scary zero at the end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where have all the years gone? :rotfl:
