What does panettone taste like? Is it bready or cakey?
    Bready, but extremely light.
And cakey, but extremely light! :D

JM, the way I remember how to spell panettone is like this.....
It's a sort of bread, so pane is the Italian for bread. '-one', (pronounced o-nay for those who don't know) is the suffix indicating large. That only leaves the double t, so if you know there's a double letter in the word, it has to be a double t!
    So..... Pane-tt-one. Simples!

In the same way, if I forget where the double consonant is in spaghetti.....spago= string. (So spaghetti means little strings!) Now, -etti is the suffix for 'little' (in the plural). So the double consonant has to go here!
(If you have g before an e, the sound changes to j, like the g in gym, so to keep it a hard g, as in gun, Italian adds the h.)
    So....spag(o)-h-etti. Simples!

Are you all still awake? :D

elsien, I got my first grey hair at 29! By the time I was 35 I had loads, so was colouring it out. Years later, there was so much grey that one single colour looked flat, which is why I now have a hairdresser do it, in two or three shades, as I couldn't do that myself. You're right, it makes a huge difference! If your hair is completely white, it looks lovely, and isn't ageing, but the mixed sort, I think, really drains the face.
Don't be afraid to go for a very different colour! It's true that one should go lighter as one gets older. I was originally very dark brown, brunette, and used a burgundy colour to eradicate the grey. Then, as I got redder and redder with the increasing grey, I tried to go to lighter browns, but found they had a 'green' base, which really did not suit me. I needed a colour with a red base, so in the end I went for a warm blonde! I'd never have thought I'd end up blonde! But it worked!

haybel. I'm sure it'll be fine tomorrow! As so many have said, one day she'll wake up and deliver a very profound philosophical speech!
It reminds me of that story Henning whatisname told, of the child who never spoke, and then one day, at a family meal, he suddenly said (something like) "There is a bit too much salt in this stew". After his parents had got over the shock, they asked him why he had never spoken before, to which he answered, "Up until now, everything has been quite satisfactory!"

Pyxis, I can beat you. I started to go grey at 16. My natural colour, in as much as I remember it, is mousy so dying it wasn't a big deal. I just do it at home, usually in a variety of colours, including the turquoise hair disaster. At the moment, I'm trying to grow out the hair I fried with that mess so its been brown for a bit. It doesn't look flat though I don't think.

Haybel - hope it goes ok for miss haybel. It may be that she doesn't need to speak so doesn't and will amaze you with ths rate she develops.

WaS - hope the appointment is ok.

May pop to the shop at lunchtime and get some panettone. Is it ok to eat Christmas food in November?

Not in our family. (Otherwise we'd double the cost of Xmas). However, xmas does begin on the 1 Dec with the xmas tree and decorations going up, and regularish mulled wine.

I try not to do Christmassy stuff until December. I've been trying to avoid the Christmas films so far, but they're making it really difficult. However, I've procured a mini panettone for testing purposes. Do I have to wait 10 days to sample?

You would have to wait in our house, codemonkey!

Ok then. I'll wait til 1st December. Its unseasonably warm here so it doesn't feel remotely Christmassy yet.

  • Hello all! Excuse me while I yawn, I am knackered now.

Most of the neurology appointment was covering my other conditions but we did establish a few things. The electric shocks down my face are Neuralgia which I am sure someone mentioned earlier on in the thread as a possible cause. He can medicate for it but as it isn't permanent yet he wants to hold off for now due to contraindications with other medication. So we shall observe and if it gets worse look at medicating then.

The headaches are definitely Cluster Headaches because the nasal spray works. It is caused by the veins expanding in my brain, hence the sharp pain, the nasal spray closes them. It isn't dangerous and no one really knows why it happens but is the worse of all headache pains (Ha! I am justified for being a wimp!). I am to keep using the nasal spray but if they begin to last for more than a day 15 minutes of oxygen can help (I stared at him at confusion at that point).

He has given me another steroid (more steroids!) to take the second I feel the pain but if it isn't taken immediately it won't work so then it is back to the nasal spray. Other preventative measures are staying warm, particularly my head and neck and sleeping on a triangular piece of foam so that I am on slope. They most commonly begin when lying down so the trick is to not lie down flat! As soon as they start I have to stand upright and remain standing or sitting upright until the steroid hopefully works and apply heat to my head and neck. I see him again in 3 months to see if they are any better.

One appointment to go and I am free! I need coffee...
