As you know was, I have similar hormone temperature issues. I'm cold and joints are sore, but I'm also aware that temperatures took a BIG leap down so even ' 'normal people' are feeling a bit colder ATM , so some of it will be normal, but that certainly doesn't mean that you should not have bloods done,

Not least because things like giving up smoking which you know has impacted for years on medication, and thus has impacted on body chemistry. You're in aposition to get these things well monitored so I think you should take good advantage of it.

    Need some suggestions folks.
Bit of background - my psychosomatic pain started when I went to boarding school at 11. Leaving a hot country and family for the cold and snow of Wales in winter didn't help, so it started as a very bad shoulder pain when I was doing and hating cross country runs, then transferred itself to situations of general stress and anxiety. And those I can handle, I know what to do and think to make it ease so I can at least use my arm!
But now I've started running again. From choice. I'm not getting a massive buzz from the running but I want to get fit and I don't dislike it - not had any problems motivating myself out so far and I'm now on week 6. And the pain is back with a vengreance. Starts when I run more than 5 minutes, stops when I start walking. And my usual mental techniques to shift it aren't working.
Any helpful suggestions to retrain my brain to behave itself?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Yes. Had numerous hospital tests and X-rays when it first started, and it's stayed so consistent in how it feels and when it happens over the years that I'm pretty sure there isn't a physical basis. If I can get the thinking right, then it goes which wouldn't happen if there was something else going on underneath. And this feels exactly the same as the pain I get when I'm anxious, same place, everything.

Edit - it doesn't happen when I'm doing physical stuff I really enjoy like swimming, walking, heavy gardening, either.

Um, switch to a higher intensity workout you really enjoy? :o. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the easiest!

If you were running to exercise Gitdog or because you want to do some half marathons etc then no, but if its for fitness sake, swap the activity!

Does sound the obvious thing, doesn't it. But I wanted something I could do as and when, that was cheap, without having to go to a gym or class, or arrange to meet up with people, and bouncing around to a dvd in front of the tv really doesn't appeal.
And I honestly did think running was something I wanted to do. My subconscious clearly thinks otherwise. And my brain is annoying me by telling me two different things at once! Wish it'd make its mind up. Pah.

Not an expert by any means but it sounds like there is either something about running that is making you tense those muscles or you're running in a poor position and this is causing pain. Are you maybe pushing it too far too soon? Maybe interval training is the answer? Did that make any sense?

Running is great for all those reasons,( and more) but its not perfect. I wonder if you are failing to see its down sides?

Its heavy on joints, on women its not great for continence and pelvic floor, and its hurting you!

However, its important to you so I can see why you are sticking with it. I miss running....well, I hated running, but in liked getting BACK from running and how I felt when running was part of my regime.

    1. Do you like your route? Do you know exactly its length and have you id'd landmarks to give your self a mental check point...(' 1/3 of the way.....getting set into it now, good for me'. '1/2 way, closer to end than start now' and so on.

    2. Just getting to the telegraph pole/ house/ tree after the next one, between land marks.

    3. Not thinking about it at all, experimenting with stride length and breathing, ( if you can, breathing is harder).

This sounds a bit like a posture problem to me. Are you finding after a few minutes jogging that you are sticking your head/neck forward? I've noticed I am fine for 5 mins but 10 mins & I have a neck problem which travels down.
