Variable. I'm really not an autumn winter person at the best of times so once the clocks change it's gritting my teeth till spring. Trying (and failing) to keep to a routine, so if you see me on here after midnight, give me a boot up the jacksie and send me to bed without any supper.
On which note, she says, spotting the time.....

I have one, too! First time meeting MIL. We decided to meet in a country pub for Sunday lunch. WaSp and I got there early and I stuck to soft drinks so that I didn't appear drunk and had skipped my pain meds because they can make me drowsy. MIL arrived and we walked over to greet her. My arthritic knee chose that point to give out, I reached out to steady myself, managed to knock a pile of empty glasses off of the bar which smashed and then literally fell to my knees at her feet before we had even said hello. I still cringe.

Fortunately MIL found it hilarious and then much to WaSp's annoyance we proceeded to get drunk and giggly and ended up going to the bathroom together so that she could have a cigarette without WaSp knowing (she had given up 10 years previously). I later found out that I was his first girlfriend that she had liked (including his ex-wife) so my first impression didn't put her off! On that point, MIL has always been absolutely lovely to me, even being my carer for years so that WaSp could work. We also used to have girls nights out and leave WaSp with his step-dad and go on pub crawls and dance all evening.

Apparently she was a total witch to his other girlfriends and wife but I can't get my head around it at all, we have never had a cross word. She did say his ex-wife was 'snooty' and his previous girlfriend before me was stand-offish, WaSp says that they tried to treat her with respect and politeness and they often ending up crying after meeting her because she was so cutting. She says she had almost given up on his choice of women before he met me. I do think more than a respectful DIL, MIL always wanted a friend she could confide in and who treated her as an equal and she got that with me. I had little concept of ordinary family dynamics so just spoke to her as I would anyone else and that apparently was what she was waiting for in a DIL, she says the other women were boring.

I know a lot about her that WaSp doesn't and she wouldn't want him to know, she has always been quite a strict but kind mother to him but I happen to know that before she was married she was a rebellious party girl and one of her regrets is having children in the 60's when she would have loved to try LSD. Her own parents used to be in despair at her. She trained as an electrical engineer during the war when women were being taught skills in 'men's jobs' and did that until she retired despite her husband wanting her to be a housewife, she wouldn't hear of it and always kept her own money.

She was very pretty and cute when young and had great fun during the end of WW2 and was never short of nylons due to the amount of american soldier 'friends' she had. She led a very rebellious life for a young woman at the time but had a huge amount of fun, she is still very open-minded today. She was also the first family member to have a black boyfriend in the 1940's, her parents nearly disowned her and several friends cut her off. She did get thrown out of the house when her dad found her condoms, she moved in with her boyfriend at the time and 'lived in sin'.

This ended up being about MIL, oops. Oh well, she is lovely enough to deserve a post. Ignore me going on but I have always found the stories of her life fascinating, she did so much and broke so many taboo's that existed at the time. She is an amazing woman.

That last sentence applies to you as well WaS.
She could obviously see the good in you to care about you so much and like you instantly.

Aw, thank you, dibuzz. I think she likes me because I am not conventional, her friends were always a little eccentric and didn't quite fit in with societies norms. You are right Pyxis, she really could write an amazing book.

Something odd has happened to my sleep pattern. I am only managing to stay awake for 7 hours at the most and then sleeping for another 10-12. I figure I am either depressed (don't feel it), chemicals are haywire or something in my endocrine system has gone wrong. All 3 are known to make me sleep a lot. I can't even attempt to stay awake, I fell asleep sitting up at the laptop yesterday. I have been awake for 6 hours now after a 12 hour sleep and am already yawning. The downside is I am often late with medication which won't help at all if something is wrong. Perhaps I am hibernating...

    Oh was, I empathise.

I have a salivary test for an endocrine measure that came in the post this week, but my sleep patterns are really up the spout this week because of ' the bad day' and I think I'd get a false positive ATM.....or a real positive, IYSWIM, but one that's inconsistent with the majority of the time.

You're probably making significant brain changes while you sleep, WaS. I slept loads when I was starting to get much better.

We're all pretty amazing, aren't we, when you think about it.

  • Sorry to hear that you are suffering, too LIR. Maybe wait a week before you do the test?
I am leaning towards an endocrine problem in my case because I don't feel depressed and I would be more of a mess if my psychological chemicals were messed up. I am also very cold all of the time with tingly fingers which points towards my thyroid. It is truly ridiculous, I can't stay awake at all. I am due to see my endocrinologist next month but I am questioning whether I should just get blood tests now, it is getting annoying sleeping this much.

We are indeed, whitewing and I am sure that my brain is doing something while I sleep. I am certainly getting enough rest!

It's ok, I'm able to be very disciplined at getting into sleep routine at night, ( just not avoiding the extra day sleep) so I'm just rolling with it for the time being to see what's happening. I can sort it out later.

I would get the tests now. Because all these physiological factors might impact on you medicinal needs. :). Ultimately out of sync endocrine systems can cause depressive feelings too. Can a nurse come to you to take bloods?
