But you clearly know that you are not entitled to collect the item.

I can't recall ever seeing an OP's credibility plummet quite so quickly before.

I am not refusing to pay; I am waiting for a response before paying.

It now appears that the seller has left incorrect contact details, and ebay are going to attempt to contact him to get them updated.

Further on the overall matter, would you be happy to give your money to someone who (a) doesn't respond to messages, (b) is over-charging for postage, (c) who leaves a disused phone number as the only means of contact?

If you would, then there is an old saying: A fool and their money are easily parted.

    a) They're not responding to a message that you (probably dodgily imo) asked at a suboptimal time.
    b) It's up to you to do any necessary checking on listed postage price before you bid and effectively agree to it.
    c) The fact that you are trying to phone the seller at this point, I simply don't understand. It almost seems like harassment to me.
I understand that when opposed, like on this thread, people can just feel, in response, like digging their heels in and sticking doggedly to their point but really, I think you should just be done with this now. Pay or decide you want to cease trying to negotiate, mentally abandon the whole transaction, accept responsibility for your refusal to uphold your end of the contract, and take your strike.

A and B could have been established before placing a bid, thus saving everyone the ongoing headache of this thread.

Ah it's quite enjoyable really, I can go round and round no bother. :D *munches on popcorn*

Sorry - that's quite different to here.

On that thread, the buyer told the seller they were going to collect and got upset when the seller told them no.

In this case, I have asked the buyer if I can collect, and they're not answering.

Not the same thing at all.

If you read the OP and all of my comments here, I have been looking for a way to contact the seller to get an answer.

It now appears that the unpaid case is an automated system, and further reinforces the view (along with their average of 1 transaction a year) that the seller isn't checking their messages.

    a) I cut & pasted my message earlier. Whether you think it is dodgey iyo is up to you; it wasn't.

    b) (i) I have asked the seller a question, nothing more, (ii) I've subsequently found that their postage amount may be questionable.

    c) Campdave suggested I phone the seller, and I thanked him for the suggestion. Don't be ridiculous about harrassment.

I agree that there seem to be some people here who just won't give up (even after they've said they would) - kind of spooky, isn't it?

If only it was the same situation, eh...

In the previous case the seller responded to the buyer's mail and said no and the buyer got upset; in this case, the seller isn't responding and may not be receiving the messages (we've established that their contact information is invalid), so i am waiting for a reply.

So nice try, but no cigars.

    Different in your mind only.
    Your post is extremely specific:
Did the auction offer collection as an option
    If not then no collection.

The line in bold can only be taken one way. It makes no mention of asking the seller about collection, simply a blunt statement that if the auction didn't state collection then in your opinion it is not allowed.

Did the auction that you bid on and won offer collection as an option?
    No.
Therefore by your own words, "no collection"
