There are people out there - my in-laws included - who do not know how to use the chip and pin technology -

Yes I know it is very confusing.
I have come up with a comprehensive user guide.
    1) Put the card in the little machine (an assistant will help if this is too difficul).
    2) Enter 4 digits.
    3) Remove card.

Maybe you could print this out and your in-laws can keep it in the wallet as a handy guide, I recommend getting it laminated as well because old people tend to drool a lot.

There are some issues surrounding your user guide.

    1 Forgot card?
    2 Forget the four digits
    3 Forget to remove card

My concern is 'what if they skip step 1 and go through steps 2,3 and then 1.

I give up, Im confused. Now where did I leave my trolley.

True, they could also forget the laminated user guide.

I dont like using cheques in shops due to ease of fraud, but I dont think they should get rid of them. As people have said on here they are usefull for paying friends / familes (when you owe money), sending with the kids to school, or paying someone like the window cleaner.

They have uses, just not in shops anymore. (In my opinion)

Heehee, will pass this onto my hubbie - 30 years old and will only use cash. Gets paid weekly, draws out what he needs for the week and thats it. its like the dark ages. If he wants anything off the internet I have to use my card and then he gives me the cash.......

I am glad they're not using cheques - I had my identity stolen 3 years ago and the perpetrator called the bank and had them send a cheque book and card to a totally random address - then proceeded to spend £3,000 of money I *didn't* have (ie, if she'd used my PIN the transactions would have been rejected) in Tesco, PC World, Argos...

I agree cheques are not obsolete - they are good for contractors or for ebay purchases, or even as gifts in cards.
  • I use cheques for school trips Looking through my cheque book thats all it's been for over the past 12 months

I'm a childminder I take cheques/cash, it's much easier for parents to pay me cheque as they can't always withdraw the amount they are to pay me (there's a limit on the amount you can withdraw yes?)
    it costs nothing to smile:D
  • Apparently.
However if they have the money to have a childminder then they have the facility to ask the bank for an increase on their daily debit card withdrawal.

    I can withdraw 1k a day.

At least he won't be thinking of CC debts or balance tranfers, another good way to avoid debt.
Though the vision may not be the true future of man but it can't be completely beyond his control.
