Cheques are being phased out gradually - the banks announced that last year (I think). Possibly by 2010? ( I can't remember what they said).

With debit cards and online banking, they are no longer needed - I can't remember the last time I wrote out a cheque.

    Lin :)
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

I'd argue that the fast payment technology at a till is cash!
It is definitely one of the quickest, yes, it's not being phased out quite yet, although it is thought posibly within the next 5 years it will be. I've no problem with cash as the longest it'll take is a few seconds to get the change. It will be quite strange though if/when it is phased out as we will have no physical cash anymore.

Must say I only use a cheque when there's no alternative as I'm lazy, plus prefer not to have cheque book weighing bag down, but I wonder what small firms will do when they are totally phased out.

On the other hand, why do banks still insist that you use a paying in slip to put money into your account? Seems a bit hypocritical, when they could just swipe the card.

The Co-op do swipe your card then key deposits straight onto your account. If you log into Smile immediately afterwards, you can see the deposit!

I still use cheques for sending money to school. It's safer as I don't trust my two boys with cash!
Here I go again on my own....

the last time i used a cheque was last week when we had some work done on the house and i had to pay the work man.
when i was writing it out i nearly forgot how to write my signature as i hardly use it nowadays because of chip and pin!

yes, I cant see schools being geared for swiping cards yet!

I must belong to an old-fashioned bank then (Lloyds), I'll mention that the Co-op is ahead of them next time, cheers Becles

Clydesdale Bank was swiping cards back in 2001 (or at least they were in Whitehaven), but just wanted me to enter my pin.

was very surprised when i went in and all i had to do was give them the card

Co-Operative was only a couple of years ago (unless the Birmingham branch was slower to phase it in
Debt of £6300 cleared in 5 years, now ZERO

A quick warning about cheques! (If you can find a shop/person that will take them)

(You should know this if you watch "The Real Hustle" on BBC3.)

Make sure you use your own pen to fill in a cheque.... Why??

Some nasty person could give you a pen to fill your cheque in that could be an erasable ink pen. All they need do is to rub out the pay to & amount details and Bob's your uncle, the've got your money and as far as the bank is concerned, YOU filled the cheque in because you signed it!

And the op thinks "I have gone back to using cheques as being more Fraud/Clone proof."

    Oh well!
