And the op thinks "I have gone back to using cheques as being more Fraud/Clone proof."

    Oh well!

That particular method of fraud isn't difficult to combat though is it? :D

    I, FOR ONE,OBJECT.

This is the notice I saw on checkout dividers at Fulbourn on Saturday.

I have gone back to using cheques as being more Fraud/Clone proof.

The blurb said something about speeding up service - nonsense!

If this has been posted elsewhere, apologies.
    chq's gave birth to fraud!

they were so much easier to duplicate and forge its untrue

If that's the case then all I can say is you really can't get out much as you claim to!

Just off the top of my head, the following no longer accept cheques ..

    Shell
    BP
    Asda
    Morrisons
    McDonalds

As already stated by Poppycat, Sainsbury's announced today that they will no longer be accepting cheques but you chose to ignore that fact and direct your objections toward Tesco.

Cheques are an outdated form of payment that barely anyone uses anymore and in all probability will be obselete before too long in favour of chip and pin.

As for grammatical errors in the thread.... so what?

I would really suffer if cheques became obsolete. I don't write that many myself, but I am a freelance drama teacher who runs courses and gives tuition. I can only take cash or cheque as payment. Nothing else would work for me, or at very least would cost a lot of money to set up. (Paypal accounts etc not really viable for the kind of work I do). I have noticed recently, though, people are asking if I take CC, and a couple of younger (18/19 year old) students have had to ask me how to fill in a cheque as they have never had to before!

In my other job, we get lots of cheques from councils and funding bodies. I also got a cheque recently from premium bonds, and I recently set up a new savings account where the only option for paying in was a cheque (since I didn't already have an account there).

The great thing about a cheque is that you, as the receiver don't have to give out your bank details. I recently was owed quite a lot of money from an organisation I did some work for. They wanted to pay me by bank transfer 'so it could be done right away' which was fine. But after giving them my bank details, I then realised that this 'organisation' was actually one person with an appaling payment record and several unhappy, unpaid tutors. It took me over two months, many phone calls and emails, and eventually mentioning small claims court to recover the money, knowing all the time that he had my bank details.

I think it'd be a real shame if cheques were phased out. I'm sure that if the technology for chip and pin exists (not to mention space travel!), then some kind of clever stuff could be initiated so that it's less easy to commit fraud.

like Becles I always send cheques into school with the kids :) looking back in my book, it's been 12 this term alone

I sent cash for dinner money one time and it got lost between handing it to my daughter to give to the teacher and getting to the cook. several cheques have got lost en route too, but all you need to do is write another, so it's not a problem :)

I didn't think anyone paid by cheque in Tesco's? I didnt even know you could! I just thought it was for Non real time goods (if thats even the right phrase!) for stuff like TV licencing and deposits on houses. You mean i could go into tescos and buy a milkshake with a cheque? That's awesome, it gives me 3 more days off interest :D

There are people out there - my in-laws included - who do not know how to use the chip and pin technology - usually the elderly and generally they are the ones who need to keep track of their spending through the use of their cheque book stubs. This policy will force them to carry more cash around with them and, therefore, make them feel more vulnerable as a result. It's about time retailers thought of them!

But the old arent the best consumers. Hence most of industry isnt geared towards them.

The old are savvy purchasers (unless you fancy an ortho bed or stenner stairlift).....yet have assets.
