  • No argument = nit picking.

Cheques books are sooooo yesterday. I can just picture someone wearing a tophat, with a quill in thier hand, writing out a cheque, noting the date on their fobwatch and then riding off on their pennyfarthing.

I have realised I have only written about three cheques this year for postal payment. Most big companies have said no to cheques for quite some time. I think ouR Co-op did away with them months ago. I did always do my debit card anyway whenever because it saved problems. However, I am quite concerned about the fraud that does go on with our cards etc and I do sometimes get bad vibes about chip and pin and the machines we use in stores are really quite public when we have to feed in the numbers - mine is ****!.

    Hi Dangerous my friend

We still have £1 notes in Scotland but very, very occasionally. Still supposed to be legal tender. I got one last week - I think the first in about two years and I passed it back on quickly because unpatriotically I wondered if still legal tender!

I've been trying to use my debit card less, and pay with cash instead. A couple of weeks ago I went to an Asda out of town. Had the money in my purse. Got a shock when I went to put in petrol as they'd done away with the kiosk where you pay your petrol. You had to put your card and PIN in the pump before you got your petrol. I've seen these before but there was always the option of paying in cash if you wanted to. If I hadn't had a debit or credit card i'd have been stuffed as there was no other way to pay for the petrol, and I was 40 miles from home.

My three local Tescos have not accepted cheques for months now..I can't recall there being any outcry about the decision to stop them.

Many shops in my local town gave up on cheques a while ago, and I suppose I just hadn't noticed as I rrely used them. You'd be hard pressed to do any shopping round here without cash or a debit card.

Cheques are nowadays till-printed anyway, not written by the shopper.

Not many small retailers have these tills, which probably makes such tills a minority. Even if they are printed as far as I know it doesn't print the gaurentee details on the back?

In the infamous coffee shop I used to work at, we had a few regulars who insisted on paying by check, what a hassel that was!

However, I remember one time, an old lady came in and got her coffee and a sandwich. Realising she had no money, took out her check book. I asked for her check guarantee card which she didn't have....I felt so bad for her....I didn't know what to do, I wanted to just let her have the coffee and sandwich but my manager was standing over me.....

I still can't believe she turned this woman away.

The amount of waste in that place and we couldn't let this elderly woman even keep her coffee that had already been poured....

slower, older technology and methods all get phased out in preference for the newer, faster techniques, it's just the way it is and something people have to accept. If things weren't phased out then we'd all be moaning about queing behind someone who was paying for his shopping with 2 and a half goats and having to wait while the cashier chopped off a few legs to give him his change, then when we finally get to the front of the queue the scales come out to weigh our gold...

I'd argue that the fast payment technology at a till is cash!
