Remember, the Government is made up of politicians. It's their job to convince people that they really want to do things that they might not really want to do
I would suggest it's their job to convince people they need to do things they might not really want to do.
Many people don't want to pay taxes, wear crash helmets, fasten seat belts, or drive whilst sober, but most sane people would accept the evidence that suggests there is a need for those things.Optimists see a glass half full
Pessimists see a glass half empty
Engineers just see a glass twice the size it needed to be

I don't see why it can't be transferable between vehicles.
(TV licences are transferable when you change address)
Then all you would have to do was go on-line and change the car reg on your account and any increase/decrease in monthly payments would take place, by DD.
No reason for them to work with complete months at all.
A computer can divide by 365 just as quick as it can divide by 12 or any other number.
I agree for the average person who perhaps changes their car every few years the amount is small - but it is always to gov.uk's benefit and it will be millions.0 -

Not sure what proportion of used car sales would currently include 'part used' VED, and the average amount per sale is I suspect likely to be less than £10 (on average it will be 1/2 a month 'lost') but you are right it will end up being several million pounds we're talking about.
I'm still not distressed about the change though.
Our fleet disposals generally have 12 months put on them before they're disposed of, which is obviously then factored into the price. It's not been unknown for us to keep the vehicles outside the office for a few weeks with no tax at all on them.
Generally though, they're standard window vans, with expensive conversions and pretty rare (but in high demand used), so we have no problem shifting them anyway IYSWIM.

Well done BillJones for volunteering yourself as the poster boy for our current tax malaise. People voting in more and more lunatic fringes into government (who have the best tax advisers themselves) on the blatant "tax cuts" which really means focus on PAYE, while raising and creating every other indirect tax they can think of.0

Personally, I think they should raise income tax, and remove VAT and other taxes.
I work my row out to support this Government and their allowances, and I'm repaid by having to pay tax on my money before I get it, on everything that I buy and then even on any interest if I save what little is left over.
If they abolished all tax & duty except income tax, at least we would only get taxed once
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science

Individually a small amount yes ,but thats the point the vast majority will just ignore this and that is what the government is counting on. It still works out as another tax being put into the governments hand on the sly and that is my main point.Because it's a tiny amount. I'm more interested in getting my income tax rate down, that's the one that actually matters.0 -
Why is it "Sly" if they get £"XXX extra revenue, it means they dont have to put other taxes up.0

If you really think that any extra money will help prevent other taxes rise then you must be very young or very foolish or a politician.
It is sly because there is a 'hidden' double payment where the VED has been paid twice for the month in which the car changes hands.
Even if you were right it is still sly.0 -
The DVLA say that anpr cameras will spot drivers who have no VED. What about all those people driving around with illegal number plates which are not recognised by the cameras?:mad:0

This is a good idea to ensure that all cars are taxed, insured and with valid MOTs whenever a car changes ownership. Look at the bigger picture !!!
As it stands at the moment if a car already has a tax disc there is no check on valid MOT or insurance but this check will be forced in future on tax renewal because of ownership change. It will stop a lot of illegal drivers.0
