Up to above 30%? What exactly does that mean...
And the Treasury can increase it whenever they want, I hardly see how doing this first makes it any easier.0 -

Because, as mentioned above, most people won't take much notice that their monthly DD has increased by £2. But, if they announced a £24 hike in VED, people would notice.
Remember, the Government is made up of politicians. It's their job to convince people that they really want to do things that they might not really want to do

People go crazy over a 2p saving on petrol, they will notice the DD rising by £2.0 -
So either it will be used to pay down the debt, will be used on new state spending, or will be used to reduce other taxes.
It's not as though MPs get to keep it in a box and spend it on champagne and ocelot noses.
Well apparently MP's do spend taxpayers money on champagne but that wasnt what I was getting at with my post. I meant that despite us talking in terms of profit, its not really a profit as it will be spent either on the running of the new system or something else. Because they never save money to cut taxes, they only "save" money in order to spend it elsewhere. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
This system will also make it easier for the treasury to do multiple price increases a year. I presume most will pay by direct debit and not pay for the full year in one go.0

You don't know the context of what they were saying. There is absolutely nothing on a tax disc that shows who purchased it - just bought one and got it in front of me - so how do you think they can prove it to prosecute?
As per your other post VED is not transferable between vehicles. So if you change cars you cannot just take the tax disc from one and put it on the new one.
That is what it means by non-transferable. I can't see many people trying to use their old disc on new car but maybe it does happen.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

Again, HOW? They can increase the price every month right now with total ease. Obviously the more frequently you pay the less time you'll build up under pre-imcrease prices, but there is nothing inherently easier about price rises under a DD scheme over the current scheme.
I may seem pedantic, but to me this is coming across as a bog standard "I hate the government taking my money!!!" rant and I'm trying to see if there is actually any substance to it.0 -

3,500,000 used cars sold per year.
Let us say 50% are sold before the end of the month then the government would make £26,250,000 just in one year.
That's millions in my book.
Your point of view is exactly the one governments hope you will take. "it's only £15" not to the government it isn't.0 -

Yes there is, when you use a primarily electronic based system they can just increase the DD and send you a letter saying "we've increased our prices" after the fact.0 -

Don't increases get mentioned in budget and start from 1st April?0
