new road tax government theft ?
Hi All
Just wanted to flag this interesting point about the new rules for the road fund/tax. Is any one else angry about the stealth tax part of the new plan??
The gist of it is, as of Oct 1 ? every single car sale will force the new owner to buy road tax and the previous one will get a refund.
Seems reasonable until you realise they will make millions from the one month overlap that will occur. You only get a refund for any remaining full months.............
you always had the option to keep it but many second hand car sales include remaining tax as an incentive.

Well they could balance it by not increasing road tax (VED) for a few years... and pigs might fly?
Also, I wonder if it will distort the secondhand market? Will nobody want to change cars until the end of the month?
And what about private sales? If I buy a car at 7pm, or on a Sunday, how will I insure it, tax it and drive it home?0 -
Only people who will be worrying about this are people who change their car as often as they have a hot meal and dodgy trader types (which usually come hand in hand).
Me, I'm looking forward to the monthly tax by direct debit option.
Also it is VED not Road Fund Tax. It is not some pot of money ring fenced for the roads. :rotfl:0 -
Given that one month's VED costs up to about £15 per month for the majority of cars the cost to consumers is pretty small, and the government certainly won't be making 'millions'. So no, I'm not angry about this, it will make a tiny difference to a small proportion of car sales.0

It's ring fenced for new roads like bypasses, dualling of carriageways etc. It's not a pot hole fund which some people think.0 -
Yes , not worth getting worked up over a few quid once in a blue moon. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0

At the same time you will be able to pay for VED by monthly DD.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
4 Credit Card and 1 Loan PPI claims settled for £26k, 1 rejected (Opus).0 -
I have been assured by DVLA that a VED belongs to the OWNER, not the car, and so becomes invalid at the point of sale. DVLA can and do prosecute for these invalid discs - which have often been bought in good faith. The reasoning is that in order to pay the VED you need to have proof of ownership, MOT and insurance. If one of those is missing part way through the period (different owner, not on your insurance), then the VED is invaild.
I am very much looking forward to paying by DD - less for £40pm for 12 months for 2 vehicles, rather than nearly £250 in a tight month for 6 months (tightness being due to Tax Credits and a slow start of month for DH!)0 -

I think we're in that category
But we're not worried. We're in that category for the same reason I suspect many others are - we cannot afford a decent new car so find it cheaper and can be cost effective to run a car until its MOT is due with the expectation of buying a new one. Or run it until it dies then move on.
So in many aspects it works out better for us - because if say we buy a car and budget for it to do us over for 10 months, we can simply cancel after this time rather than having to send the tax disc back for a refund. Especially since the last two discs I sent back took 4 and 1 month respectively to actually receive a refund .
I imagine driveway dealers will also like it - because they can now tax the car for a month without 6 months worth of tax hitting their cashflow. And buyers won't now be able to negotiate a tax disc included.0
