Don't you have to be advised in advance of any change to a Direct Debit?If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

I think so, that is why orange/EE always write to tell you that the contract you signed up on at a cheap price is now much dearer, but tough you can't get out of it and we're taking more money. (But that is changing now

I meant that despite us talking in terms of profit, its not really a profit as it will be spent either on the running of the new system or something else. Because they never save money to cut taxes, they only "save" money in order to spend it elsewhere.
I find it hard to get upset over a couple of weeks loss every couple of years, really, when the government takes 47% of each extra pound I earn, which is more than under all but a few months of Labour.
The fact that I pay £460 for each of my cars, £70k if I move house, 40% on the interest I earn, these irk me a bit, but £20-30 loss on a new tax disc, it just doesn't feel that big of a deal.0 -
most people who set up direct debits set it up and forget about it. So less likely to notice the hit when it gets increased. So less outcry. When everyone has to apply for a tax disc and has to sign the paper or whatever and see the increased amount before paying they will notice it and rant and rave about it more.
If government beleives there's not going to be a lot of outcry because everyones got a set and forget DD on, they're likely to increase it more often or increase it by bigger amounts.0 -
thanks to Billjones for indirectly proving one of my points. he is correct when he says that it has little effect on an individual. That is exactly what the tax man wants us to think as all those little amounts build up and no one even notices. as if by magic another stealth tax appears.Does any one remember Superman 2or3 when the computer expert takes all the .5 pennies ? Also what happened to fuel prices when we changed from gallons to litres.I find it hard to get upset over a couple of weeks loss every couple of years, really, when the government takes 47% of each extra pound I earn, which is more than under all but a few months of Labour.

I'd like to know how the 'system' will 'flag up' that you have sold your car & your DD will then cease.... automatically... obviously.
This will be an interesting system.0 -
Possibly you will have to go online with the purchaser standing next to you and apply to cancel/refund your VED, and the purchaser will have to go online to buy VED, (if they do it straight away, the car will still flag as insured
)
Then you cancel your insurance from the instant you phone/go on-line and they are supposed to get their own insurance (which takes days to show up on line anyway) before driving it away................
So much simpler than the system we have now :rotfl:I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

& what will happen when thousands of DDs "Bounce" ie not enough funds to pay it, will those people automatically get a fine?0

I actually think this is a good idea because it dents the dodgy 'tax and test' market, to a degree. That isn't to knock the legitimate 'tax and test' market, but unfortunately, without a decent understand of vehicles and what to look out for, it can be quite hard to tell a lemon.
I assume the car will still have an MOT so it's not exactly killed it, but I am good friends with someone who bought a 12 month'er from a local dealer. She took it in for an MOT a year later and the garage was horrified. They said there was no way it had passed it's previous MOT in the state it was and that it was bodge-tastic. It was essentially a death trap. The fact you don't need it MOT'd means that it'll still exist in some form, because it'll still be possible to get dodgy MOT's I guess.0
