When have driveway dealers ever put a V5C in their name and taxed a car? This new tax disc arrangement and CIE will hopefully get rid of a swathe of these tax dodging criminals.

It is not "government theft" it is "another revenue stream" ;)

With 7 million used car sales a year, if they "make " £10 on each through double VED that is £70 million pounds of "extra revenue"

Seems reasonable until you realise they will make millions from the one month overlap that will occur. You only get a refund for any remaining full months.............
you always had the option to keep it but many second hand car sales include remaining tax as an incentive.

Doesn't this happen anyway? It just happen to all vehicle sales instead.

    I think we're in that category :(
But we're not worried. We're in that category for the same reason I suspect many others are - we cannot afford a decent new car so find it cheaper and can be cost effective to run a car until its MOT is due with the expectation of buying a new one. Or run it until it dies then move on.

So in many aspects it works out better for us - because if say we buy a car and budget for it to do us over for 10 months, we can simply cancel after this time rather than having to send the tax disc back for a refund. Especially since the last two discs I sent back took 4 and 1 month respectively to actually receive a refund .

I imagine driveway dealers will also like it - because they can now tax the car for a month without 6 months worth of tax hitting their cashflow. And buyers won't now be able to negotiate a tax disc included.

I do bangernomics too but I still usually get a few years out of a car as I do fix things when they break. Losing half a month tax when I need to replace the car is just part and parcel of it. same as it is now.

Like I say it'll just be dodgy traders types that it will hit as they can't buy a car, razz around for a month on the tax and MOT before selling it on and doing it again.

Joke reply for a joke statement by myself. It was meant to hint at them spending the VED on making the roads worse, Send some boys out in the middle of the night to dig holes etc.

I have been assured by DVLA that a VED belongs to the OWNER, not the car, and so becomes invalid at the point of sale. DVLA can and do prosecute for these invalid discs - which have often been bought in good faith. The reasoning is that in order to pay the VED you need to have proof of ownership, MOT and insurance. If one of those is missing part way through the period (different owner, not on your insurance), then the VED is invaild.

Are you suggesting that current tax discs are invalid on change of ownership and that DVLA prosecute for their continued use?

    Utter nonsense, if so.

Fair point actually. Not sure what proportion of used car sales would currently include 'part used' VED, and the average amount per sale is I suspect likely to be less than £10 (on average it will be 1/2 a month 'lost') but you are right it will end up being several million pounds we're talking about.

I'm still not distressed about the change though.

why haven't the dvla ever uttered a word when you renew your tax disc as the new owner?

Surely if this was the case then you would get some sort of warning stating that you should have applied for a new tax disc.

The biggest inconvenicne is if you buy a car that has serious faults days later - you would have just bought tax for it which makes it a headache.

It will be a full month per car for a private sale of a vehicle that is taxed, as they wont refund on or after the 1st, and the new owner has to tax from the first, so there is a whole month paid for twice. Previously you could buy a car today that is taxed until 30/6/2014 and you don't need to pay for a new disc until 30th June.

If the car has stood at a Trader on SORN, then it will be the same as now if the previous owner surrendered the disc. They lose out on any days remaining in the month, and so do you if you don't buy it on the 1st of a month, but it isn't necessarily the same month.

I think (dangerous eh?) that the original point is that the robdogs will collect double VED on the month of sale for a lot of cars, which is true.

Does it matter to me personally? not the money, but it will be more difficult to buy a car from a private seller.
