Amount of loo roll needed for a poo varies a lot according to a number of variables, but I think it'd be fine to tell your dsd that 3 squares is enough for a wee. You might need to show her how the perforations work too, as lots of little ones just grab-and-pull which is how they end up using yards of it :D. I find the squashing the roll helps too, as does loading the roll on the holder "underarm" rather than "overarm" IYKWIM.

I don't see why he can't have the conversation with her, what's for her to get upset about? However, if he simply won't, then you're going to have to, preferably before you end up with a massive bill to unblock the toilet.

In the meantime, I agree, squish the roll so that it doesn't flow so easily and keep the ends of rolls with not much on for when she's with you, if there's not much there she cant use it ;)

Was there not a recent MSE article/thread on just this that produced hundreds of ideas?

However, nothing beats the way a former employer handled it some years back - They simply switched back to Izal skitey stuff. The lavvy-roll consumption thefts went right down, overnight! :D

How old is she? Some young girls use it for make up, and alsorts excluding toilet needs.

I normally say the same as a PP has already mentioned `whose been eating the loo roll?` or `whoa I`m sure I put a new roll on only yesterday, where on earth is it going!!

ETA just seen she is 5! My dd and ds are 6 and 8 and we too have rolls down the loo! Just explain how loo roll works and hope she listens to you, a blocked loo being the main annoyance.

Buy cheaper loo rolls, home bargains/lidl and aldi sell great packs of loo rolls and they aren't thin cheapy looking ones either!

I lived alone with my three daughters for 20 years and seemed to buy toilet roll only rarely. Got married last year and since DH moved in (daughters now away) I seem to have to buy it every week!

  • I find the idea of rationing toilet roll bizarre and wouldn't dream of rationing what my children are allowed to use. Prefer them to clean themselves properly and grow up without toilet anxiety of any sort :-D. They've never blocked the loo yet due to excessive use and I haven't had to remortgage to cover the cost of toilet roll so far :-).

Yes, at 5 you can most definitely follow her to the loo and tell her she doesn't need so much. I was doing exactly that with my 5 1/2 year old granddaughter only yesterday. I think I pointed out that 'Grandma isn't made of toilet paper, you don't need that much!!'

It's hard for them sometimes to balance, reach the paper, and then tear it efficiently on the perforations - but that doesn't mean you shouldn't encourage them to try!!

Same. I guess everyone is different, but I wouldn't ration loo roll.

I wouldn't be so bothered about the amount of paper used, as such, but toilet blockages ARE a problem!
