Why is it so bloody hard to buy a birthday present for your mum?

Ummmm... Your mum and I are very close in age.

You are underestimating how a 50 something woman views her age.

My friend (74 and still backpacking) has over 30 Kipling bags in all sorts of patters- we were laughing about it yesterday.

It's not about age but about personal preferences.
See how useless i am? Going by your bags i thought you would be in your 20's :rotfl:

I think you are younger than my mum, they look more like the bags my girlfriend has. Can you pick a bag for a woman in her 50's for me to look at?

I think the Kipling bag Tiddlywinks showed would be very suitable for a lady in her 50's, it's lovely. 50's is not old! lol From what you've said, I doubt your mum is the "twinset & pearls" type anyway, so it would be just fine.

Also agree with the idea of gore-tex jacket. even if you don't know her size, you can guesstimate, and if it's wrong you can always exchange it.

I think taking her out for the day, with a nice lunch and a trip to an outdoors shop to buy her something she likes would be lovely!

Right she's getting a gore-tex jacket and a kipling bag. I like gore-tex as well so sizing should be easy to guess. Where in town am i likely to find kipling bags?

Probably John Lewis. You can check stockists here:

I would want you to buy me this bag http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kipling-Womens-Defea-Top-Handle-K1363611W/dp/B00HFU74P2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401118893&sr=8-1&keywords=defea+kipling

Yes I am in my fifties and would love the Defea in various colours I already have one in the triangle print.

But want a tropical flower black one or a black one next.

I'm your mum's contemporary and love Kipling bags too.

Another thought if your mind's not completely made-up yet; does she have an e-reader or tablet? I bought a Kindle for a friend a few years ago and she was so pleased it didn't take long before I treated myself to one. And though initially I didn't see the point of an iPad, now I'd grab mine if the house was on fire (cat under the other arm)! The best thing about both of those - taste or size don't enter the equation.

    HTH :)

I bought my mum this for her 60th a few weeks ago, she chose it. I filled it with Chanel face creams & nail varnish, mini champagne bottles, luxury chocolates, afternoon tea voucher for expensive hotel and some vouchers for John Lewis.

Loads of Kipling bags on Amazon so you could do next day delivery.

As they are cheap I would also go with the kindle paperwhite and the official leather cover. I love the free books I can get, reading in bed without disturbing husband with the light on, being able to just pick it up when I have 5 minutes.

By the way, you are making me feel old when you are talking about your Mum in her 50s! I'm an 'older' Mum, so it will be a long time before my daughter buys me a present she has chosen herself, let alone paid for. I hope she shows as much thought as you are.
