If she likes hiking £250 would be a decent amount for a voucher with someone like hotels.com for a weekend away

Perhaps because you think of her as a mum, not as a person?

I'm a mum, and I like theatre tickets, good olive oil and antipasti, books, plants, and geeky bits and pieces (raspberry pi last birthday).

I don't like smellies or absolutely anything pink and/or floral. Rather like your mum, I suspect.

Think of her as you would a friend who has the same interests, and you won't go far wrong.

How old is your mum. If it helps I'd like a spa day, massage voucher, a lovely bunch of flowers (not supermarket) or afternoon tea voucher.

Whereabouts in the UK does she live?

    Only you know your Mum!

Personally I would absolutely hate all of Chocaholic's suggestions. :o

I thought you just usually buy her a candle. To jump from a candle to £250
The candles cost £175 they are really posh and come in these decorative glass dome things. She likes them but i have bought them enough times now.

Size no idea, make up rarely and she works. Hobbies are hiking, painting and i cant think of something she likes other than posh candles.

£250 but i'll pay more if people think that is stingy.

Ok, that's a bit more info to play with!

    Few ideas:

A nice leather work bag, something neutral/classic if you don't really know her tastes.
Painting: a set of professional brushes, a nice easel, with a couple of canvases...
Hiking: a gift voucher for a hiking store, so she can get herself a new pair of boots? A weekend stay in a hotel with lots of hiking spots nearby?
If she likes reading, a Kindle Paperwhite?

She wont use leather i know that for sure but a bag is a bit better than a candle. What is a decent brand of bag in the £250 price range?
