Interesting reading on sell by/best before/use by and the differences between each. The only one that matters is 'Use by'.
and i still maintain that you can take that with a pinch of salt0 -

To be honest, I ignore whatever's on the packet and give it a good sniff. Also if the food is green and furry then that's a combat indicator that it's off too... If it's knocking on the fridge door, asking to be let out then I concur that it would be safer not to eat it.
... But perhaps my attitude is not ideal for all - but I reason that I was gifted with an immune system and my stomach is pH 2 for a reason. Yes - there are hidden nasties about, and extra precautions should be taken if you like your meat/fish rare, your eggs soft boiled and you like eating raw veggies. I think it's about being sensible.0 -
You get a bit more lax about dates when you have a lottie. Veg does not come with a sell by date on it when you dig it up or pick it yourself! And if you think logically about it - neither does most food if you take it back to its basics. You can freeze stuff forever, and still use it - it's just the final taste that starts to deteriorate after a while...but it's still edible.
I can't remember the last time I even looked at a sell by/use by date. Months if not years ago.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

i only ever use sight and smell. i remember arguing with someone in a shop once about a product that i could see mold on, she kept insisting that there was nothing wrong with it because it had come in that day!! i said i dont care if it came in this minute, its OFF
i wish dates hadnt been invented really then we would be forced to use our natural abilities0 -
and yes, i do find some on here talk as if they have children that they can dictate to what to eat and not to eat in the cupboards, i find that bizarre, which is what i meant by the school dinners thing.
but no, im not emotional about it! i see all the shades of grey about it. i am however getting quite worked up on discussion time so this is light relief...
Surely, it's back to the sort of relationship you have. If I take on the role of chief cook and shopper in our home I don't expect to have my job sabotaged/made more difficult by someone eating the ingredients for meals I've planned. Treat stuff (like nuts/crisps/biscuits) is different. And while I decide what we're having most weeks, that's based on my extensive knowledge of what are my DH's favourites (and mine;)).0 -
yes, im not saying i dont understand the desire to enforce that, i was just saying that i veer from that, to accepting that actually i dont really have the right to do that, i certainly wouldnt accept someone being like that with me0

I don't see it as a right or not a right to be honest...when you've come to make your packed lunch in the morning and everything you've bought for yourself is gone...when you've agreed to buy treats for him and you and you go to the cupboards and all of yours are gone but none of his...
I get a bit upset sometimes over it. I'm trying to chill out and be a better girlfriend but it's just not working, and I don't really know what to do.
I love him to pieces and I'm very lucky that he's a very hardworking, man about thehouse type of person. He's incredibly supportive of a lot of things I do and want to do but at the moment because we see and treat food differently I'm getting quite depressed at not being able to keep up with what he wants our food stocks and meals to be like.
That's all.
Our greatest weakness lies in giving up; always try just one more time0 -
ColleenPamela, don't know if anyone else has mentioned this tactic but when I dish up a meal, I also dish up the left-overs into Tupperware boxes (well, Lock-n-Lock boxes) and immediately put the lids on. I call these "set-asides". Once cool, they go into the fridge or freezer for lunches. I do this with cakes, muffins and flapjack, too. I do this before I sit down to eat.
In the beginning, I told my husband that he couldn't eat them because, if he did, we wouldn't have lunch tomorrow. (He's known to have hollow legs and would eat an entire meal for 4, if he could. Rarely puts on weight, either. << grumble >>) So he now has a rule: if it's left in the pot, it's OK for him to have seconds/thirds/whatever, but if it's boxed up, then he has to leave it."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'
