Dixons and Currys both sold out.

I am a previous sky customer but gave up contract when my box went duff rather than pay for repair.

Can someone tell me. If I buy a 2nd hand box from E-bay can I simply plug this in to my dish to get free channels?

Yes, don't pay more than £20 inc postage for a 2nd hand box
  • I have recently been offered what could be described as an even better deal than Sky, which is Satellite TV on-line. Smeone in the U.S. is offering Sat TV on line - 2000 channels for a 1 off payment of around £60 to download software. Whether this is a con to get us to part with £60 or just a good idea I don't know as I am not quite ready to set this sort of system up.

Anyone else looked at this offer ?

It's a con, stay well clear, all you'll get is temporary links to bad quality pirate feeds

Tempted by this to have alongside my Virgin Media package (broadband, phone & basic TV package for £20) as a backup. I'm pretty happy with the Virgin service at the moment but am considering this in case in future they raise prices, have technical probs, go bust etc. Looks like a good deal but before I go ahead and buy could anyone in the know answer these few q's?

    1) I've heard somewhere that with Sky's freesat you may have to pay to replace the card completely at Mr Murdoch's will. Is this true? Someone in an earlier post mentioned something about getting some channels without having a card, can anyone confirm which channels?

    2) When the BBC/ITV launch their "freesat service" next year would it be possible to get this instead of the Sky freesat (which confusingly seems to have the same name??) using the same dish? Presumably would at least need a different box I'm guessing as Sky must surely be trying to prevent people from doing this.

    Cheers for any help/advice...

Sky will only guarantee the card for 2yrs but the card only allows you to get Ch4, Ch5, Sky3 (maybe a couple others), all other channels (200+ mostly rubbish) are free-to-air (fta) on satellite and don't need a card. Rest of Ch4's channels are expected to follow Filmfour and go fta in 2008 when their contract ends with sky

Look at the link of my post on page1, it lists the channels you can get without a card.

BBC/ITV's freesat boxes will work with sky dishes, same a sky boxes will still receive all the channels free that Beeb's Freesat will other free. Only difference they'll be between the two marketed services is the box, the transmission signal coming from the satellite is the same. Sky want as many people using their boxes so it's easier to market these owners to take their subscription service and please their shareholders by making lots of money.

  • Before you go and throw away you well-earned cash to Murdoch, I thought you all might be interested to know that, for £79, Maplin sells a portable digital satellite receiver. [I have heard that it may also be available from Lidl stores.]

The case contains a receiver box, a dish (~35cm), an LMB, 10m of cable and three different mounting devices! Oh, I hear you say, it only has a 35cm dish. Well, I am currently located just south of Amsterdam and can receive all BBC and ITV channels (including ITV2+1 and ITV3+1), as well as Film4, Film4+1, and many more channels I have time to watch. As for radio, I am able to listen to Jonathan Ross on Saturday mornings and Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs on Sunday mornings! :D

I am unable to receive Channel 4 and 5, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that when their contract with Sky comes to an end sometime next year, I will. It is also worth mentioning that I am not tied into any 6, 12, xx month contract. :rotfl:

Although I haven't tried it yet, the receiver box has the frequencies of hundreds of other European channels already included. So for thoses that want to, all one needs to do is re-align the dish to Astra 19.2E, Hispasat, Eutelsat, Hotbird 13E, etc., etc. Et Voila! ;)

    Enjoy Sky!

Having recently signed up for this deal via Sky telesales, I felt compelled to sign up and write when I saw the deal endorsed in the money saving tips email.

My initial intention was to purchase freesat for £150 because freeview reception in my area is marginal. When I called Sky to purchase Freesat, I was told of the £75 offer, exactly as described at the top of this thread. However, here's my experience so far:

    1. The £75 offer requires you to have the digibox permanently plugged into a phone line. If a phone line is not present at the box, the installer will run a line to the box (albeit rather shoddily). If you pay £25 extra, you can have the install without a phone line.

1a. I opted to pay the extra £25, but the installer still installed a phone line (unfortunately, I was not home and my wife knew no different). Call me cynical, but I believe he did this on Sky's instruction - i.e. to encourage you to use the pay-per-view services, such as Box Office. Since I now had the phone line that I specifically paid NOT to have, I tried to get Sky to refund the £25 - which they refused, preferring to give me a £25 credit to my Sky account. I have instructed my credit card to recover the fee.

    2. When I signed up (as I say, via Sky tele sales), they took 3 authorisations from my credit card - £75 for Sky, £25 for No Telephone Line, and a third authorisation which I was informed was just an "identity check", but I now believe this to be related to the next point...

    3. You receive a 6 month subscription to two sky "mixes". However, having subsequently checked with customer services, you have to cancel these before 6 months are up, otherwise they will start billing you. Hence why I think they took the third authorisation on my card.

So in summary, I am feeling slightly mis-lead by the whole process! At least it has solved my freeview reception problems, I suppose!

I have bought exactly the same deal from Asda for £75. I have been using a freeview box for about 5 yrs but the reception in my area is pretty poor and we dont have access to Virgin so I am hoping Ive made the right decision.
