When we first came back here, we deliberately got a flat on the top floor, so as not to have people walking above us, and with walls of stone so we rarely hear the neighbours. Great plans we had.

Then spring came. And summer. We have THE noisiest, most disruptive "neighbours" I have every encountered. Right over our heads where we sleep. Nesting gulls. Our neighbours on either side don't use the top floor to sleep (wise people!) but we had to because we like cold rooms, needed the other bedrooms for children and the flat is always too warm because downstairs is an old man who likes to keep his flat at 23 degrees, so he tells us.

First there's the dawn chorus, - or not if the chicks wake up early and fancy a feed. Blah blah blah every morning from about 4am. They can talk on for hours. Every now and then, just to keep up the varierty and tension for our sakes, they play chasie across the roof. Then they have another game - I think they maybe cracking open the shells or something, where they continuously drop things onto the roof. They've even ventured down one of our closed off chimneys. That was terrifying. I had no idea what it was at first. I thought at first a fox might have got in (yes, I know, hardly likely to come through the front door and promenade up the stairs then wait while we open our door so he could sneak in). It's unnerving.
  • Are there any free local magazines in your area? We pick ours up from the local library or the charity shop. There's often free events listed in those, also places like libraries, galleries and museums often have special free to attend events - so its worth trying to find out about these. We've seen kids club free days, story time in the library, party in the park type events, free craft days, all sorts. Planning ahead means you can save money with packed lunches etc but also might give you something to look forward to.

I think sites like netmums have lists of free days out, so might be worth checking on there (and on here too) for days when its too wet/cold or you just fancy a change from the beach. All the best :)

There are free things like that here. There is a booklet that lists them but its like gold dust to get hold of. We're lucky because there are lots of well maintained parks near by.

What about an allotment? They're pretty cheap if you can get hold of one. Could put up a cozy little shed? I'm sure you shouldn't sleep in there, but no-one would notice for the odd night I'm sure if you fancied a breather!
  • I like your idea but not practical to sleep in a shed with a child!!

I havent done any ebaying for a while - bad experience with troublesome buyers and under estimated postage costs, i actually made a loss!? I might be brave and do a big listing at the weekend.
  • Good news.

Terraced houses that were put up for sale about two weeks ago are now sold!! I know they are not on my street but think it shows houses round here sell quickly if priced sensibly. Hope it stays this way.

Noise when you really need sleep, is debilitating. I've found if I let them wake me up night in night out, I sleep too lightly, and don't get enough deep, quality, sleep. That's why I use those wax earplugs. Not all the time but just every now and again, when I know I need a deep sleep.
  • Tonights dilemma. Sleep in bedroom one listening to next doors tv and drunks go past screaming and shouting or sleep in bedroom two and listen to music from a house not even on my street but its so loud i can hear the thud thud thud of the base in my house!

Where is the consideration when you have children trying to sleep and you need to be up for work in the morning?
I feel like a failure as a mother because we live here.

Must try and stay positive. Debts are reducing slowly but surely. Steps in the right direction.
  • Instead of getting upset im trying to use my neighbours incredibly loud music as motivation to stick to my new financial way of living. They will be here forever, i on the other hand will be out of this sh&t hole one day.

Every time they annoy the hell out of me like tonight instead of getting upset im going to try and use it to give me an extra push with my finances.
  • Must remember i wont be here forever, i wont be here forever.
