Mc afee or avast ?

Er....told you I was a technophobe. When I turn on my laptop, there's my name and email, Locked and a blank box for my password. Windows 8.1. When I have used my password I get The start page with all the pictures. Where do I go from here? Also, to download the mcafee removal tool, do I need to sign up with Mcafee first?

To the last question - No. Just download the tool.

Find the tool where you downloaded it (by default in your Downloads folder), right-click it and choose Run As Administrator. At this point you'll likely be asked for administrator login details - if you don't know the administrator account details then you may be a bit screwed.

Thanks folks. Just come back from PC world where I bought it and they gave me a print out and also,offered to remove it if I got stuck (I assume for free). Will let you know how I get on. Can't look at it until tomorrow.

Well, whilst I was out my husband downloaded the mcafee removal tool, as suggested, and it worked! No sign of any mcafee left On my laptop, although we were not able afterwards to log in as an administrator so thst's another story. We are using avg, the free one. Thanks so much for your help everyone. X
