Oh and about the formula, babies over 6 months can still have stage 1 milk, stage 2/3 is a load of crap really to get around the formula advertising laws, stage 1 is fine for any baby ages 0-12 months and beyond if so desired.

DS1 had SMA gold and then white up til 12 months but DS2 never needed the white hungier stuff but i moved him to follow on milk as you can get deals on this, 2 for £10 or whatever so it makes it better finanically for us. Even better when hes 12 months and on to cows milk.

I actually have a friend who baby stopped breastfeeding by choice and wouldnt take formula or cows milk and she went to see a dietician and she kept a food diary and she was told her diet was suficient enough that it didnt matter that she wasnt drinking milk at all!!

Katy I too use the follow on milk when I buy formula (I cannot express milk to save my life and so use formula if I am away from DS and someone else is feeding him...) as Boots do deals on the ready made cartons and you can get advantage card points etc.

But it is implied that babies need these follow on milks instead of first stage when actually they are fine. Hungry baby milk is just about the type of protein used, whey or casein, and can cause constipation so it's probably good that your DS was fine without it!

It never crossed my mind with DS1 to put him on follow on milk. But being a bit more MSE with #2 we did.

What i cant believe is that you get toddler milk in the baby aisles!!! I mean !!!!!!!!!! Why???

  • i didn't buy any of the progress milk, mine stayed on stage 1 until 12 months ... well actually until he was nearer 2 because he was on lactose free and i didn't want to give him lactose free cows milk until he was nearer 2 because it's semi-skimmed.

i could have put colief into progress milk if i'd thought he needed it but he didn't. from what i have seen it only dulls babies appetites and stops them eating proper food (am i going to get shouted at here? i'm only talking anecdotally, the progress seems quite rich and has more nutrients than ordinary formula but do babies actually need the extra iron? can't they eat peas/broccoli/meat etc?)

a dietician confirmed that he could have semi-skimmed lactose free milk before the age of 2 because his diet was adequate so the semi-skimmed wouldn't harm him.

a lot of the advice is blanket advice, because for example you couldn't say it's okay to give cows milk instead of formula to a 9 month old because not all 9 month olds are on a good diet of solids.

I agree with most of what you say but being on follow on milk certainly hasnt dulled my DS2's appetite!!! Hes a wee bucket (as i call him), eats what you give him then hurries over to our plates to see what we have and what he can help himself too then if he finds crumbs on the floor afterwards he eats them too! :D

it's just the babies i knew who were on it, their appetites were dreadful until they came off it.

but i suppose my eldest was like that and he wasn't on progress, he just didn't have a large appetite. so i'm talking pants really :o

Lilly please pass on the URL for http://www.howbreastfeedingworks.com to your friend. Sadly many healthcare professionals tend to be the least helpful and least knowledgeable people when it comes to breastfeeding. The numbers for all the support lines are listed there, should she need them.

    Ah thank you, will do.

I am waiting for a phone call hoping she has gone in to labour on her own as she wants a water birth and can't do that if she has to be induced :(
She wants to have immediate skin to skin so that should help too (if she can of course). We have been on lots of shopping trips to get her nice summer tops with wider straps to allow for the maternity bras, not very MSE, but fun none the less!
My only worry is her weight, she is very slim (size 4-6) but isn't naturally that way (she was a 12 when we were at school). So I hope she manages to eat enough while breastfeeding as I know she has struggled whilst pregnant to keep her weight up. She nearly wasn't allowed to go in the midwife lead suite due to her low weight:eek:

I will forward her the info that you have given. She really hopes she manages it, not even considering the fact that they will have to rebudget totally if she has to start buying formula as well!
